History of Sully Island and the Captains Wife

Sully Island and the Captains Wife in the Vale of Glamorgan. Steeped in history and folklore. I delivered this talk to walkers taking part in the 10 Days In May walking festival across the Vale of Glamorgan. I talk about some of the local history but also about the nature of folklore and how stories get moved from place to place.

Last time I was in Wales about 6 months ago we ate at the Captains Wife, lovely pub. But while I was waiting for the others to arrive I had a stroll on the beach and I'm certain I found some fossilised human and animal footprints in the petrified mud. I took a couple of pics but I've no way of verifying if they are what I think they are (I dont know any anthropologists or have museum contacts), and if if they are its amazing they're only yards from the steps! I know there arfe supposed to be prints along that coastline so maybe.

It is quite possible. There are many catalogued dinosaur footprints on that stretch of coast

This pub is most definitely haunted I worked there for about 2 years and the way the building is laid out is at the front is the bar middle is the kitchen and out the back is a long corridor with staff room at one end and public toilets at the other with offices and stock rooms in between and one day I was taking a short cut from the staff room onto the main bar and as I was walking past one of the stock rooms the door started banging and I could hear children screaming I opened the banging door and there was nothing in it other that boxes of crisps. I have also seen a pan lift up off the counter and fly across the kitchen and land perfectly on the other side no chef in the kitchen just me also manegmet at the time have seen dark shadows figure at the end of there bed it is creepy as hell in there supposedly the captains wife is under the kitchen walking fridge

Interestingly, the last person to receive the Albert Medal (later upgraded to the George Cross) was Margaret Purves, aged 14, for saving the lives of 2 Boy Scouts in rough seas who had becomne trapped on Sully Island. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Purves
