The Chokosi or Anofo are Akans, hence the similarities with other Akan languages/dialects.

The Ahantas are Akan people. Their current language is a version of Akan language. Languages evolve hence the language of the Ahantas. It does not look exactly like Twi and Fante, of course the language has evolved. Nonetheless, any Akan person who has not heard Ahanta before can make sense out it, because it is similar language. How different is Ahanta from Nzema and Baoule. Baoule does not sound typically like Twi, yet they migrated from Kumasi, over dispute over Asante Kingship. Yet, the language has evolved, that does not make a non Akan language. Even Guan and Akan are not different, there many similarities. No wonder the Guans refers to themselves as State. The languages and the people we call different Akans and Guans have lived together for centuries in Old Ghana Empire, Mali Empire, etc and now Ghana. The languages were very similar, just that the languages have evolved, yet there similarities. It is not by chance that they share similar names.

@@kennethagyemang2263 whilst it is right that language evolves and also that the Ahanta are Akan. i dont think the difference in the Ahanta language can be explained simply by it evolving in isolation. Rather the Guan language plays are far greater part in that difference. The Guans settled in what is Ghana much earlier than the Akans. Two pieces of evidence of this are. 1. The Fantes acknowledge that when they arrived at Mankessim, ( i believe) they met people there. The Asebus etc. This is also why Fante is radically different from Twi. 2. There are Guan enclaves scattered over Ghana. Yet there are some instances in which their language is more intelligible between each other than their immediate Akan neighbours. Ahanta is very similar to Nzema but a significant proportion of these two languages are not intelligible to other Akan speakers. This is because of the influence of another language - Guan. But to add confusion, Guan in more recent times has been influenced by Akan, thus many Guan words and their naming conventions etc have been replaced by Akan names, words and customs. One cannot ignore or discount the significance of the earlier Guan influence. Regarding the migration from the Sahel there was a significant gap for the Guan and Akan languages to evolve independently. That is if they ever were settled in the same place in the old empires. however these empires were vast and it is doubtful that they came from the same location. Rather the commonality came from the language of the rulers of those empires a good example would be Gyata and Diata (Sundiata - lion king) are effectively the same word.

The people of Sekondi do not actually classify themselves as Ahantas. According to history, the people of Sekondi migrated from Adansi, in the modern day Ashanti Region. Kundum festival was borrowed by Sekunefo from the Ahantas. Sekondi/Sekune meaning in Akan; Esa kum : meaning wars has empoverished me. Paramount Chiefs of Sekondi lie Nana Anaese and Nana Owura Duku never claimed to be Ahantas.

So when did the Adansi migrate to Sekondi and why ? Part of the reason people in Sekondi-Takoradi say they are not 'Ahanta' is because it has become cosmopolitan. However the issue i have in what you are suggesting is that the Ahanta migrated from the Pra westwards.hence their capital was eventually established at Busua. However they first settled at Shama. It would seem odd that somehow in between these two portions of Ahanta are the descendants of Adansi. Furthermore Fante Not Twi is more widely spoken in Takoradi. In fact as i understand it, it is not a case that Sekondi is not Ahanta but rather parts of the Ahanta kingdom sought to extricate themselves such as Shama and Dixcove largely because of interference from the Dutch and this is what caused king Badu Bonso to have a conflict with the Dutch led by Tonneboeijer.
