The Abuja National Mosque was conceived when the capital of Nigeria moved from Lagos to Abuja. General Murtala Muhammad initiated the idea, and subsequent leaders like General Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Murtala Ramat Muhammad, worked to implement it.
- A committee, including prominent civil servants and leaders, was formed to select a location and oversee the construction. They secured funding through contributions, notably receiving significant financial support from King Khalid of Saudi Arabia.
- Construction of the mosque began around 1981 and was completed by 1986. It was officially opened in 1992 and became the most prominent building in Abuja at that time.
- The mosque's administration was placed under the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, which appointed various committees to manage different aspects, including the welfare of the mosque, administration of imams, education, and financial affairs.
- The Abuja National Mosque serves as a central point for Islamic activities beyond just prayers, including seminars, educational programs, marriage ceremonies, and community support initiatives, making it a vital hub for the Muslim community in Nigeria.
