How royals early on fought over power and the throne. What political parties emerged. What were their platforms. How the non capital city provinces operated. The corruption. The slavery system. How commoners were looked down on. Literacy and more. Just wanna know more! Hard to find many narratives without korean romanticized history.

Since there was ancient civilization North of North Korea with Stonehenge and waved sword only mostly found in Korea and North region, there as a culture that had religion, language, culture, metallurgy. If that is the indication, the recent discovery of the red mountain including the Godness statue wearing a Bear necklace (Bear is symbolic for women in Korean culture at that time there was Bear nation and Tiger nation and Bird nation(the root of ancient Korea has bird at top of their totem poles) and most likely Bird nation took Bear nation's princess(VIP woman) as Bride) -- that dates back 7000 BC. Fast forward to about 700 AD, After writing was more prevalent, the numerous books scripted by "GongJa"(Confucius) words by his followers from China indicated "GongJa" say he learned everything from 'north' civilization. Thus, most historical documents indicate China's civilization was derived from this civilization. The Chinese books indicate 'north' civilization just 'north civilization' without a name. However, Korean calls in "GoChoSen" which means ancient (go) Cho (bird) sen (nation) of the old Korea. This first civilization of east Asia was so large that its people moved out to both east and westwards. The same or exact same artifacts are being discovered in North Italy to Ireland and Finland, to east all the way to Mexico, and along the traveling route, same or similar artifacts and languages are found. By the way, the next nation was called "Gogyro" which means hook which the ying-yang symbol came from, it means 'order or harmony via governing' set by GoChoSen. And following after GoChosen was the nation name of "Go (old) gyro (hook)' the 'hook' part 'gyro' became 'Korea' in the present day. It's interesting to find "Mississippi" "Michigan", etc and its meanings are the same as Korean! "Mi" - means in Korea is 'freshwater or river'; "chi or ci (si)" - means in Korea 'fish' - sippi and gan - means in Korea 'place (home or house), Again only in old GoChoSen languages. Note that in linguistics, it's very hard to not only match the sound but also the meaning. If I follow the logic, unless there was a large population and civilization with the resource and advancement of culture only can have the means to explore in the motivation of necessity or curiosity. And the people from such civilizations can only expand and overlap o ver further expansions It may be worth studying the "yo-dong" civilization and first nation of Eas Asia (or maybe the human Sapien Sapien) "GochoSen" more in-depth. It can bring together the puzzles of where nations come from and why there was a road before the silk road that was well-traveled with premium horses and carts with carts at least 5000 BC before the silk road.

Choseon did have the "slave" class and a caste system so to speak and it was King Jeongjo who started to change this. I hope I am not mistaken.Also I understand that they were much earlier in inventing printing and not the germans.

The Joseon Dynasty did not end in 1910. In 1897, King Gojong declared himself as Emperor of Dae Han Jae Guk. The last Empress of Korea, who was killed by the Japanese in a very gruesome way, knew the modernization, industrialization was the future and was needed but it had to be done by the KOREANS not by the Japanese. Joseon Dynasty is not looked at as a negative dynasty. Of course there are good and bad things about a country. Most Korean dynasties state that they were founded taking after a previous dynasty. Most Koreans were not in favor of the Japanese way. Most Koreans were not collaborative. The ones in favor were the ones who wanted to make money and sold the country. Unfortunately, pro-Japanese people still had a lot of power after the liberation of Korea, so the history taught about Korea was written by pro-Japanese people. Especially what is taught in the western schools. Current professors, students, and the general public in Korea is speaking out about learning the correct history and rewriting history books. You bet there will be changes in Korea, I'm just hoping there isn't too much hardship for the people in making it.

Dr. Peterson may know about Korea but he certainly does not understand the partition. The Soviets were resistant to participating in the war on their Eastern front - they maintained forces on the Mancuoka border and there were some local battles, but NO effort by Russia to participate in the war against the Soviets. ONLY on 9AUG - AFTER the A-Bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, did the Russian declare war on the Japanese so that theu could take part of the spoils. They rapidly moved through Manchukuo and in rapid succession sent TWO CORPS+ into KOrea headed South. In an effort to STOP the SOviet ccupation which took the US by surprise, the US insisted they stop at the 38th parallell to keep some part of Korea free. Hodges did NOT land with US troops until some tme later. To infer that the US cut a deal with the Soviets as a reward is patently WRONG - as is to infer that the Soviets made any great contributions to the Pacific War. SImply not supported by the evidence. So, I'd say you were an 8, maybe a 7 on your history. Jim Palais would be disappointed!

The Russians had every intention of becoming involved in the war against Japan. The understanding was that they would enter the struggle three months after Germany's defeat. It's true that the dropping of the atomic bombs galvanized the Russians into action and they overran Manchuria in a blitzkrieg of their own. Korea was occupied jointly by the Russians and the US to disarm the Japanese forces there. The Russians wanted a share in the occupation of Japan but the US vigorously opposed them, lucky for Japan!

The Soviets had been promised a bunch of things by the allies in the Pacific front, back before the Nuclear bombs were an option. The Soviets probably had every intention of waiting until the non-aggression treaty with Japan expired (Apr 26), but when America dropped the bombs they realised the war would be over by then if they didn't act fast. They still wanted the concessions the allies had promised (plus potentially land in Japan itself). When Japan surrendered the Americans realized that giving too much to the Soviets would be counter productive and in the end it played out similarly to what he described. America would have preferred not to partition Korea but after playing the cards the way they had had, leaving the North in Soviet control, at least temporarily, was pretty much unavoidable.

The Joseon was a nation of beauty and art and peace basically. Those were its goals art peace and beauty. The culture architecture was all art until the the imjin war Joseon was somewhat succeful as a peaceful small beutiful kingdom in the east. Those were its goals but it lead to castastrophy as its infastructure population were not up to date gojong probably had ambitions of taking land from Manchuria and make Korea into an actual empire but it was far too late by then

This might sound crazy but Japan was a veritable democracy at the start of the 20th century. If Korean collaborators saw rapidly modernized Japan vs steadily declining Qing China and Joseon Korea, I find it very credible that many Koreans would willingly go along with Japanese takeover. Japan kick-started Korean industry and, as he mentioned, Koreans were elected into office in the Japanese democracy. This didn't last because the Japanese democracy proved more fragile than expected and it soon devolved into a dictatorship that couldn't even control its own military. In case you were not aware, even the Japanese prime minister was assassinated by rogue military agents that ended up taking over the country. So the many Korean collaborators of Japanese rule shouldn't really be blamed for being unable to foresee what the Japanese couldn't (and for that matter, what Germans and other European powers couldn't foresee in Germany.)

As for pre-20th century images of Japan in Korea: Japanese piracy had always been an annoyance, and the Incheon invasions certainly didn't help the Japanese be well-liked in Korea, but I doubt they would be remembered as fervently as today if Koreans hadn't experienced it all over again during the waning years of the Japanese Empire, in which the military had taken power (like in the 16th century) and was committing atrocities left and right (like in the 16th century). It takes at least two instances to create a trend.

@@franciscoflamenco yeh Japan's constitution and parliament was too weak. The military had no checks/balances...and the military just did as it pleased...Then it went from the very awesome 1910s-1920s cultural and economic hub..and quickly; because of the great depression and powerful/independent military...turned into a "government by assassination." Where people whom were lower on the totem poll...could assassinate any moderates and any members of the upper class and government that simply were not radical and pro imperialism enough. Those low rank assassins would be praised and not punished, because they were seen as brave heroes (I can't remember why...some sort of classic Japanese story about a brave lower class killing a higher rank. But anyone who didnt fall in line..from artists to opposition...they ALL ended up either killed or put into japan versions of Gulags! Then ...and I will not excuse Japanese war crimes...but then, Russia and Japan had their sino Japanese war and won. Japan had taken over Manchuria..renaming it Manchuko.... Then, the military AND the navy..which both HATED eachother..both worked hard go plan a large invasion... I really need to learn more about the region...especially the history and content from the late era of Korean's history(josean) to the dictatorship of the 1980s...to today.. I am super curious to see how the josean political parties worked. I understand how like norons were from the north, and sorons south..and that they would constantly try and push the other out of court/kill each other...BUT! I AM SUPER SUPER curious to what the actual political party platforms for these different groups were.. k(Like how America had pro federal gov "federalists", and pro states rights/limited gov power "Democratic Republicans" I think..... There were no Koreans living in Japan before 1910. Some Koreans came to Japan to run from the persecution in Korea but that's it. The Japanese democracy has nothing to do with Koreans. You don't need to troll here. Choson, Choseon, Joson, Joseon, or even others, anything is possible though the official rules of Korea gov' for writing korean into roman alphabet recommend Joseon. Two or even more different languages are meeting each other thesedays, having different speaking and writing rules of themselves. Nothing can perfectly present others but similarly at most. Each of those 4 choices has its own excuce to choose. 'ㅈ' of 조 possibly into either 'ch-' or 'j-' (either not matching perfectly), 'ㅓ' of 선 into 'eo-' or 'o', considering the accent of 'o' which can be either 'ə' or 'o' or something else, while 'eo' is more specific. From the these reasons, you don't need to bother him to chose Choson of all. Even Joseon or others would change over the time, as the language itself has done and will do. For giving disrepect to the professor, saying scores, BE SOPHISTICATED PLEASE, and HUMAN. We all are not perfect and don't need to be to give a lecture or presentation. I think he's already very good at his work.

The Korean(corea) ancestors in ancient times of the ice age survived by escaping from the cold living inside caves.
