I was stationed in South Korea, two weeks after the 'tree incident'. I knew things were getting serious during Orientation: "North Korea is only 11 seconds away, if you are an artillery shell. Have a productive tour of Duty." Nothing like a calming briefing! US Army, 1976-1980.

When I wad stationed there in the 2010s we were told that If you are stationed north of Seoul Your life expectancy was around 10 minutes due to the number artillery pieces aimed at the border.

Bro it being called the “tree incident” makes me so happy. The US army is no joke.

@@ChavezzslovakiaTo be fair, the north Koreans didn't just kill those 2 officers, they actually tortured them for hours. Right under the bridge of no return, so the Americans and south Koreans could hear it. If anything our response should've been war.

Is it part of the reason you only signed one contract? Or is it true people were becoming disillusioned by this time about America's presence? The fat electrician has a story specifically about it which especially if they offered 4 test contracts now I would never reenlist haha

I'm on exchange in korea. Saw the DMZ pretty early on. It's got this dark sorta aura, but peaceful somehow at the same time. Like you know there are guns and artillery aiming there, you know the history, but at the same time, there are no disturbances there. Nature is just chillin.

Probably one of the biggest "fuck around and find out" moments if we really sent that many military personnel to finish chopping down a tree. But I get it. Them boys back then definitely had hair pin triggers just waiting on the slightest sneeze coming from the north. Social media sphere would go absolute ape shit if that kind of show of force is displayed for any reason besides all-out battle. 'Murica!!!

An extra detail about the axe incident. North Korea claimed Kim il Sung planted that tree and any attempt to prune or cut it will be met with deadly force. The assembled army the US put at the border was basically them saying "I'd like to see you try" North Korea chose not to send anyone.

@@Chavezzslovakia My apologies for this being a year late apparently, the frog boys are a group of korean boys who disappeared under suspicious circumstances and whose recovery efforts were also suspicious. It's believed the government had something to do with it - such as that they were accidentally killed at a nearby practice range - because of how botched their recovery and autopsies were. Their parents went broke trying to get answers, and iirc they continued until their death / until present day.
