A Word on Westerns

3 жыл бұрын

The Lone Ranger was, and is, every youngster's hero. Same with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and many more cinematic icons. But not every young kid wrote books about their heroes. David Rothel did. When he grew up he never lost his love of movies or movie heroes...both human and animals. David wrote the best seller "Who Was That Masked Man? The Story of the Lone Ranger" in 1976. The book became an immediate bestseller and was even a main selection of the Nostalgia Book Club. David followed up his Lone Ranger book with a deeply satisfying look at singing cowboys called..."The Singing Cowboys" and an exploration of movie animals called "The Great Show Business Animals." In 1977, David was a guest with Rob Word in Florida for the syndicated show biz news insert series, "Stardom." Those 5 short episodes have been reassembled and filled with new illustrations and graphics for this episode of WAY BACK ON WEDNESDAY.

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking to Clayton Moore in the early 1980's when he made an appearance in Spartanburg, SC. At that time he was forced to wear the big Foster Grant sunglasses instead of his trademark mask. He was a genuinely nice man and answered any questions tossed his way about The Lone Ranger.

Thanks for sharing the interview Rob. Those are some awesome subjects to dive into. I had gone to The Roy Rogers museum back in the late 90's Because I had heard that Roy would greet the guest at the door. Sadly he wasn't feeling good that day and passed away the next year. The museum was great to see. Again a sad thing that it's not there anymore either. Been to the Gene Autry museum. It is great as well. 👍

Another fantastic job, Rob! Love the Lone Ranger. It's a shame the character hasn't been done justice in a long time. Both Legend of the Long Ranger and the Armie Hammer/Johnny Depp movies were terrible. Like most others, Clayton Moore is the Lone Ranger for me. Everyone always describes him as a good and gracious man. I do love the story that Jay Thomas used to tell every Christmas on the David Letterman show. What's funny is that Clayton Moore could also play a really mean bad guy. Recently watched The Crimson Ghost serial where he played the main villain's right-hand man. Good stuff!

If any of you viewers live in Texas, there's a display of items from the Lone Ranger TV show at the Texas Rangers (the law enforcement ones) museum in Waco,TX. A local lady doctor collected items such as one of the masks Clayton Moore wore, one of his hats, one of his double holster gun belts with guns, and other items including Lone Ranger toys and posters. There is a picture of her with Clayton Moore before he died. She too has since died and supposedly there are more items that aren't yet displayed. I guess they'll rotate them in the display. Thanks for this video Rob. I'm going to get the books.

I have David Rothel's AN AMBUSH OF GHOSTS wonderful western location book... and as a location historian myself, I always admired his dedication and knowledge. When it came to THE LONE RANGER, that is the Wrather Corporation... I can well imagine he had to suck up to them somewhat when he wrote that book, and this was I believe before Jack Wrather took the mask away from Clayton Moore, as his personal appearances at supermarket openings and Builder's Emporiums where I first met Moore, was the main source of his income. Moore like so many cowboy heroes got no residuals from the TV show or the movies. When you need Wrather's co-operation, the very use of the LONE RANGER name, the photos etc... you have to write as if it was a PR handout for them, you can't be too critical specially with their unfair treatment of the true one and only, made for the part, lived for the part and forever will always be the most remembered for the part Clayton Moore. Unfortunately I never met David Rothel, but his enthusiasm for 1980's Klinton Spillsbury's LONE RANGER fiasco I'm sure was short lived... as for the Johnny Depp version -what a waste of great locations, let alone $250 million!
@AWordonWesterns
