I got an Odyssey 2 in 1980. It was fun for a 5 year old me. My favorite games were Pickaxe Pete, KC munchkin, KC crazy chase, UFO, Showdown in 2100 AD, and Invaders from hyperspace. I emulated the Odyssey 2 on my pc recently to relive some of these games. Nostalgia bomb.

Nice video! I am a game collector from Brazil and my first video game was a Odyssey² (only Odyssey here). We have a few titles translated to Portuguese and rebranded with a new name, like Pick axe Pete changed to "Didi na mini encantada" (Didi at enchanted mine). In Brazil Odyssey² community is still strong producing new games, new books and modern accessories like a updated version of voice module.

There were nine games that supported the voice module: Attack of the Timelord, K.C.'s Krazy Chase, Killer Bees, Nimble Numbers Ned, P.T. Barnum's Acrobats, Sid the Spellbinder, Smithereens, Turtles, Type & Tell. It's weird seeing an overview of the Odyssey 2 history without mentioning the KC Munchkin lawsuit.

I never had an Odyssey 2 when they were out. I didn't know anybody who had one either. I got my hands on one about 5 years ago and absolutely love it. Pick Axe Pete and KC Munchkin are my favorites. I managed to get about 20 or so cartridges for it. It stays safely stored away most of the time, but does get taken out once in a while and loved. I just discovered your channel today after looking for videos on the Odyssey 2. Thanks for the vid, now time to check out a few more.

I've considered doing another video on it, I did one ages ago on another channel but i wasn't very happy with it so I never moved it over when I made this one. On top of that I got involved in the Amico stuff for a while and I've been nervous about doing much with Intellivision since then frankly. I didn't own one of these as a kid, but I remember playing KC Munchkin at a friend's house and thinking it was SO much better than the version of Pac-Man I was used to playing on my 2600!! The controller was a huge improvement too. Also, the console itself looked super high tech to my 1970s eyes! 😅

Not only had one, still have it, still in perfect working order, still very fun to play. Wish it would come back as a retro game. Also, it was the first computer I learned to program with the COMPUTER INTRO cartridge. Yes, I learned Odyssey Assembler before I learned any other computer language. I believe it's actually Zilog (Z80) language, but have never verified that.

actually I kinda really dig that learned to code on it. Atari had stuff like that to back in the day as well. Honestly its kind of amazing that they managed to setup things like teaching programming on a game console in the 70s!

A buddy of mine owned this console in Chicago. It was a lot of fun actually, Pick Axe Pete might have been the best game on it. He had the Type and Tell and we used it to type lewd comments that would generally receive some scorn from his mom… memories.

I actually liked the games a bit more than the Atari, which even then would get repetitive quick, at least they had a ton of games though. Interesting I think KC Munchkin was sued because of its similarity to Pac Man and they had to stop manufacturing it.

Another unique feature about KC's Crazy Chase is that you could create your own maze. We used to box in the ghost men and concentrate on the catepillar. I used to use the Type And Tell to make headers on my VCR tapes since my cheap ass would use the 6hr recording time in order to get 3 movies on a tape. (Those damn blank tapes were $25 each at first!) The Slot Machine game had a glitch were all of a sudden 9999 would be added to your score.. It happened on more than one game cartridge/system we used. Everyone's favorite was Attack Of The Timelord.

We had one in the UK, It was a good machine for the time, some really good games, very challenging to master, well worth a look for anyone, if you can get one to own even better, I wish I could find a decent one on sale. They don't stand up to time like they do at people playing them, tough little machine.

Yeah Odyessy wasn't something I ever had growing up I had a colecovision to start and then moved into Nintendo. Tons of people love this little system and the original Odyessy as well though and it was a fun system to look into and get some exposure to by looking into this one. Having it and some of the boardgames would be fun just because of how unique that idea is!

Great Video! However there are a couple of things stated in it that are incorrect. First the Voice module came out in 1982 not 1980. The intellivoice actually came to market first but not by much. Type & Tell was the most commonly owned Voice Cart, it came with the module. The last game released that used the Voice was called Turtles (late 1983) which was the ONLY licensed arcade port made for the system by Magnavox. Just prior to that, the game Killer Bees was released with voice enhancements. KC's Krazy Chase was one of the first games released for it, in 1982. The very last game released for the system in the United States did not use the Voice module and was called Power Lords, licensed from the maker of that toy line. Also, this system suffered greatly from lack of 3rd party support. Imagic was the only company to release games for the O2 (Demon Attack & Atlantis) in the US. Parker Bros also made games for it (Q*bert, Popeye, Frogger, & Super Cobra. Tutankhamun & Spider Man were completed but not released) but they were only released in Europe & Brazil

Glad you liked it but all my research and a quick search on google shows the odyessy 2 hitting in 1978 and the voice module dropping january of 1980 and the intellivoice not hitting till 1982. Do you have a link to your dates so I can confirm and make a documented correction in my description if I have that wrong? @@geekstorianI know what I told you is true because I was a young man in 1982, and I was an avid collector and follower of odyssey2 games. Where did you find your information the easy way to check and see where it came files in the release order just look at the game number they are chronological. I will look for some sort of documentation to show that the voice came out in 1982 and not January 1980. You are correct with the fact that the odyssey did get released in 1978.

I got an Odyssey 2 at an auction a few years ago, and I have enjoyed playing it. Alot of the games I have for it have been fun to play. Not sure if if it could've succeeded better in the States given the competition, but it's good to hear it has a following in Europe and Brazil, and to some extent here to.

It's wild to think about all the consoles I've played on! But guess what? I never had an Amiga. 😅 When the big decision between PS1 and N64 came around, I chose the PS1. And boy, I don't regret it one bit! 🎉 While N64 had classics like Mario and Zelda, PS1 had my heart with games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark. Those games? Absolute gems! 💎 A buddy of mine had the N64, so I did get to play it a bit. GoldenEye? Super fun but those controls were a challenge! And Mario 64? Iconic. Oh, and that super scope thingy for the N64? Super big and kinda awkward to use. 😂

Great video; but at around 1:40 or so it sounds to me like you're implying that Atari and other competitors to Odyssey 1 led to developing O2, but the O1 only ran until 1974, it was replaced by Magnavox's dedicated Pong consoles. "the system itself was dated and eclipsed by more advanced (Atari, Fairchild et al)", but O1 was already off the market by then.

Magnavox mever had an arcade presense so in the space they were occupying at the time no not reslly atari “was” however selling pong machines which used an idea that was already on magnavoxes console and releasing home versions which would compete in the space so in a way yes. They wouldnt become full home competition till 1977. That and the fair hild which came out in 1975 would most definitely be causes for consern in the home space mode directly for the odyessy 2 which if memory serves was out in 1978.

This implies that the O1 was still on the market in mid-late 70s, as you didn't mention it was discontinued after the '74 holiday season. Not a huge deal, but def confusing to anyone who didn't already know the history. Oh, and Fairchild came out in holiday '76, not 75.

Magnavox died in 1975 when being fully bought by Philips of Netherlands. Marketing name continued for another 40 years before licensed to Funai Electric, another dead American Brand Label like RCA. Magnavox was so successful with Odyssey I, three years, 350, 000 sold, killed the company and Baer and Sanders Assoc. sued Atari for three dots on a screen. It was no video game, just a TV amusement device that lived many years hiding on a closet shelf. Fairchild Channel F in 1976, ATARI VCS/2600 in 1977, Magnavox/Philips Odyssey 2 or Philips VideoPAC G7000 in 1978, Mattel Intelivision in 1979, Coleco Vision in 1982, and the North American Video Game crash of 1983. Everyone exited the unprofitable console market except Atari Inc who split into Atari Corporation (Tramel Technology, Ltd. - Home computers & Game consoles ), and Atari Games Inc (Arcade machines). Magnavox/Philips delayed Atari VCS/2600 release for a year to avoid loss of intellectual property and a true video game system design (affordable).

KC's Crazy Chase was actually made after Atari successfully sued Magnavox for making another game called KC munchkin which Atari argued was too close to Pac Man. When you look at the 2600 it was obviously Superior to the 2600 Pac Man. One competitor you forgot to mention at the time that was popular was the Bally Astrocade. I wonder if you'll do video on the Bally?

Our neighbor had one plus the (you nailed it) worthless voice module. A lotta of money to occasionally here a spoken word in KC’s Crazy Chase. I had a 2600 but I remember really digging the Odyssey joystick design though.

My grandparents owned one. I remember playing the Space Invaders clone game and some others. Unfortunately it just never was going to take off with the Atari juggernaut around. They had a whole R&D division (aka the arcade division) to draw from.

Especially with its price point so similar and superior graphics on TOP of the library. Still a cool unit and piece of history to look at though! Our dad gave us a choice, Atari or odyssey back around 79 or 80. We chose the odyssey mostly because of the images on the box. It just looked more fun and had a keyboard. I remember evenings if our whole family taking turns on pick axe Pete. One of our favorites. I remember getting alien encounter for my birthday. I just wanted to play it and skip school :) I remember saving my money from mowing lawns and such to buy quest for the rings. I remember having to send the whole system back to repair the controls. Ours was not replaceable like some of the versions. I got my hands on a voice model a few years later working at Lionel Playworld. Got a deal on what was supposedly defective but the complaint was voice only came out of the speaker. My brother still has our original system. I bought one off eBay many years ago and modified it with replaceable Atari controls and rca jacks for video and sound to the tv. I also bought a cat ride that had all the games included, even many that were not ever available for sale and some homegrown games too. This game system will always have a great place in my memories, along with the Fairchild f that we had before the odyssey 2. Love the video about this system. Thank you for doing it as many people either forget, ignore, or never heard of it.

Probably more fair to say the VCS was overpowered than that the Odyssey2 was underpowered. There will never be another console as ahead of its time as the VCS was when it launched, even if not even the console's designers truly understood this point. Take the VCS out of the equation and the Odyssey2 was exactly what you'd expect of a console released two years after the Channel F. That said, the Odyssey3, which I only learned about a few years ago, was probably the most underpowered console in history. It was literally just the Odyssey2 again, but with the added ability to display a static background at 4x the console's normal resolution. Literally nothing else. And they tried launching this 1978 hardware in 1983, the same year as the Famicom.

Yeah I think they needed to bring it out on a budget so they counted on some other gimmicks to make it unique and to make it stand out so they opted for the voice and keyboard options to do that. It was by far weaker than its competition but if you look its release date ....well its 1978 man. Still weak by those standards but this wasn't a 1983 release. Thanks for hanging out btw.

@@geekstorian Well, don't get me wrong. The Odyssey2 had honest to goodness advantages. It's really the main reason it didn't just immediately die as a platform. In no particular order: 1) It was particularly good at drawing mazes or pieces of mazes, even if the grid size was the same across every single title. 2) It had an impressively large ROM with an entire digital alphabet and a few universal shapes, giving games a chance to actually do something more than be hopelessly stymied by the 64 bytes of RAM. 3) It was much easier to develop for. The VCS didn't start getting system seller games until at least 1980, but you could squeeze most of the Odyssey2's potential out from almost day 1, so it can be argued that the Odyssey2's library was largely superior for its first year or two of existence.

See I never got to play it or even see one really all my digging was online mostly because a friend whos no longer with us requested it as it was his favorite console. I love a lot of the ideas try tried to put into the console. Also kC Munchkin looks awesome I"ll admit its a cool looking version of Pac man, never heard of UFO though..

When the Odyssey2 came out in 1978 it was on par with Atari VCS. Very similar looking games but by 1980 Atari had released Superman, Video Chess, Space Invaders, Adventure, Maze Craze, Night Driver and the first releases from Activision including Boxing and Fishing derby... and by 1982 Atari had many arcade ports and third party games. Not to mention competition from Intellivision. The poor underpowered Odyssey never stood a chance. They boasted about the computer keyboard in advertising but most games didnt even utilize it. You would see the same sprites in almost every game.. the ball, the man, the tree and other shapes which made all the games look the same. In North America there were only 2 third party games released. No licensed arcade ports. Another odd thing was that most games only gave you one life. I understand that people are nostalgic about the O2 because thats what they grew up with. And yes i agree Kc Munchkin was better than Atari's Pac Man. I had a friend in my neighborhood in the early 80s who had the O2 and we would play Kc Munchkin and Quest for the Rings. I thought they were decent games but i was glad I had Atari. I think Magnavox should have forgot about the keyboard and spent extra money on making the system more powerful. Oh and they also should have employed more than just TWO PEOPLE to program the whole game library.

Yep, bad timing. If the M2 had not been put on hold the first time, maybe it could have come out and had a bigger market share, but by the time it did it was too late (and underpowered compared to the competition).

Yeah it had a lot of very cool concepts going on but it just hit at the wrong time and really need more than its hybrid nature to make it stand out a bit more. Its still a super cool little console though! Thanks for swinging by and checking this one out btw!

While the Atari did have a finer resolution. And a larger color palette. T's a bitvof a mistake to call iy ubderpowered. The O2' built-in cjaracyer set allowed it to display up to 16 chracyers(12 from the Built-in characyers and 4 program-created sprites) without flicker - always problem for tha 2600. Furthee. Tgose characyers all moved independently. Unlike the Atari. The main reason for Atari's success had far more to do with their agreement tosell a Sears-branded Atari. Moreover the Voice was used on many more games than you mention. spellbinder Sid(a spelling cointerpart to Nimble Numbers Ned) . Aytack of yje Timelord and Killer Bees all used tge Voice.

I get your points about atari i cant definatively speak to all of them having never owned one but thoee make sense as to the voice software the intent wasnt to do an exhaustive list of all games that were supported but to give a sampling and show some examples. Very well put together and I see there's plenty more of good stuff on the channel. Grew up with a Videopac and loved it. Some happy memories with that system and I still like it, it's such an underdog! Cool overview of its history!

We had a hacked console. It had eprom reader and a box full of eproms. Think we almost had all games on chip.

GeekStorian, thanks for this walk to the really early days of video games. I was introduced to Pong, but never knew about the Magnavox side. On a production note, please back off on the audio compression/limiter to your voice. I know it's a nostalgic VCR sound, but it's a bit annoying in today's audio.

What you know as the Magnavox Odyssey 2 was in Europe the Philips Videopack of something. I knew it, I saw it and I have played with it but it could never make me want one. It did not appeal to me. The cartridge needed to be bought for real money. Around the same time, other computer came to the market, as a kit. Then games could be typed in from a magazine, without any further costs. The Odyssey / Videopack did not have that. Still after so many decades I do not like this kind of gaming.

No , it’s not like that . Just the experience of owning that system in the day . All the kids wanted to play arcade ports . I think the only arcade port the system had was popeye , and it was a weak version of popeye too. I know I had the quest for rings game , but was too young to understand the game . I was like 6 when we got the system .

@@jamesstewart3771 ahhh gotcha and yeah I mean I can empathize a bit I was a colecovision kid and everyone was still super into Atari. Colecovision had a ton of good games but everyone still for some reason wanted atari 2600 even then it was weird.

Even pacman on atari 2600 was bad....until they came up with the arcade version Yeats later...when I play pac man on atari 2600 I was disappointed cause I tough I was gonna play the quarter machine in my living room🤣

Unclear on why you insist on calling Atari 2600 the “VCS.” Even if VCS is the “official” name, literally nobody calls it VCS.

because that was its name till the 5200 came out then it got renamed the Atari 2600 , I suppose its just a historical preference or an odd tick for me maybe it just seemed fitting.
