@Avocado Panda Some longer variants of Yari spears could be considered pikes, so I would say they did. And Yamabushi are sort of like Monk-hermits that live on mountains. They are a bit complex so I will just leave a link that has some great information for you. www.japanese-wiki-corpus.org/Buddhism/Yamabushi.html

During the Western Army's attack on Fushimi castle; where Torii Mototada was the deputy. The Shimazu expressed their willingness to join the Eastern Army and asked Torii to let them help defend the castle, but wasn't granted. The Shimazu then had no other choice but to join the Western Army. This account, along with their refusal to move upon Mitsunari's order during the Battle of Sekigahara, perhaps, convinced Ieyasu to spare the Clan of major punishment.

@@itsrye8001 This is a very interesting and popular story (it could also very well be true), yet it seems many historians over the past several decades claim it is probably false, and that Yoshihiro sided with Mitsunari from the start.

Have you thought of doing any videos on the Boshin war and the events that preceded it? I find the whole affair difficult to understand. Mostly the politics and gauging how advanced the Tokugawa (and the rest of Japan for that matter.) got before getting musket spammed by the Sat-Chō alliance.

That's incredible, I must finish learning the language and visit. I feel like it would help my writing tremendously to learn about present Japan. Fun fact: The current Emperor is actually the Great-great-grandson of the penultimate Daimyō of the Satsuma Domain, Shimazu Tadayoshi. One of Emperor Shōwa's daughters (the current Emperor's aunt) also married a descendant of the Shimazu as well. I'm not sure how closely related she & her husband are though.

Your wrong. Japanese people don't do that. Noble Families do that, and not just in Japan, everywhere. In fact, European noble families have older records about their ancestors then the japanese.
@novrinkov0053
@novrinkov0053 6 ай бұрын
@@timokohler6631 lol Gaijin If you don't know, sit down. Even ordinary families place importance on preserving the names of their ancestors. Some even adopt boys from other families to preserve their name. That's why, not long ago, giving birth to a boy was considered important. This applies not only to noble family but also to ordinary farmers and merchant families. Even today in Japan, family lineage and family names are important. In every Japanese family, the family name and family crest are passed down through the family. Every family in your country doesn't have a family crest, right?

something i found a bit interesting that, during both Kamakura and Sengoku Jidai, Shimazu Clan was quite known for its solid experience in land battle (since their exposure to guns and experience in many invasion, notably Mongol Invasion). However, Shimazu led Satsuma domain, would dominated Japanese Imperial Navy (since Togo Heihachiro came from Satsuma) and its reversal also happen to ther fellow counterpart. At this point in time- I think the world can go as far as to consider the Shimazu clan/family as the "Guardians of Japan". Throughout the history and entirety of their existence- They've fought so hard for their family's survival and yet later in history leave a mark on the country that would influence the country on maintaining traditional identity but also a sense of proud national pride and patriotism even as Feudalism ended.

I was lucky to have a chance to visit the Shimazu estate and gardens of Sengan-en right before the start of the pandemic. It was really interesting to learn about their history and the fact that they had one of the largest libraries of foreign books in the country for most of the Edo period and played politics with a lot of Europeans. It was clear that they used their sort of salutatory neglect from the Tokugawa shoguante as a way to really build their own power and independence. I was hoping for a mention of the Anglo-Satsuma war and how it later led to all mikans imported into the UK to be referred to as 'satsumas'. What really stood out for me though, was the fact that it was someone's job to inspect the poop of the head of the household everyday (though it was likely a more common practice, just that they made sure to let tourists know that fact). How they treated the Ryukyuans . . . not really mentioned all that much for obvious reasons and their control of the sugar that they produced for them.

The Shimazu clan pretends to be their own pedigree. It was around the 15th century AD that Shimazu began to claim that Minamoto no Yoritomo was a illegitimate child. The first Shimazu clan, Koremune Tadahisa , is said to have been born in 1179, but is now suspicious from the literature of the 12th century. Tadahisa was appointed as Satsuma Mamoru around 1185, but if so, he would have been appointed governor of Satsuma at the age of six, which is impossible. Other sources indicate that Tadahisa participated in an event at the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1179, suggesting that his birth year was in the early 1160s.
@usa7006
@usa7006 2 жыл бұрын
In the early 1160s, Minamoto no Yoritomo was young and was exiled to Izu. There is no point of contact between Minamoto no Yoritomo and Koremune Tadahisa. Common sense suggests that Minamoto no Yoritomo and Koremune Tadahisa have no parent-child relationship.

Yes the Mori family is still in existence! It appears the current head of the Mori family is someone by the name of Mori Motoyoshi.

Why are the Shimazu not made into playable characters and shown more in the Samurai Warriors games? 🤔

I haven't played as a southern/far western clan in total war Shogun 2 yet. I wonder if I should play the Mori or Shimazu. Chokosabe is also interesting.
