I link the clarinet and trombone in my head as two jazz instruments that fell out of favor, for whatever reason. I guess neither excelled at bebop styles.

@@baribone98 There's always exceptions to the rule, of course (J.J. Johnson, Buddy DeFranco) but I think of clarinet and trombone as more popular in the early days.

I highly suggest you listen to some Bob McChesney, and also the trombone has stayed very relevant even outside of jazz, James Brown's band leader was a trombonist himself, Frank wesley.
