Fun fact, that "you can make a religion out of this, no don't" part was not just comedy. I looked it up and turns out Robespierre tried to make a religion called Cult of the Supreme Being, which obviously didn't last since he died.

And then good old young Adolph so admired the French Revolution and what Robespierre created that he promised to recreate it in Germany. So he was a disciple of it, and there do seem to be many disciples around today, though they are probably unaware of their connection to Robespierre.

@@jeffreysmith236 In the 1939 census 98.5% of the citizens off Nazi Germany identified as Christian. The nazi party also banned pagan practitioners like astrologers, witches and other pagan priests, precisely for being pagan and not good Christian. In 1936 the protestant state church was founded led by a nazi. The catholic church was effectively abolished as tends to happen in protestant countries. The largest religious affiliation in the country was a nazi led Christian church. The idea they weren't Christian is ludicrous. Hans Kerrl was a devout Christian, delusional of course as he believed the old testament was tainted by Jewish conspiracy but he firmly believed the state should cleanse Christianity from the Jewish influence and make it proper. He also supported the LDS remaining in Nazi Germany. Which given their racist views was an easy sell. This translates roughly as: Protect, O Lord, with strength of hand, Our people and our fatherland! Allow upon our leader's course To shine your mercy and your grace! Awaken in our hearts anew Our German bloodline, loyalty, and strength! And so allow us, strong and pure, To be your German youth! Does that read polytheistic pagan to you? And what Hitler said in a book he wrote ages ago and what he did when in power are entirely different things.
@josephbrowning4220 Жыл бұрын
Nazi Germany was an overwhelmingly Christian nation with similarly overwhelmingly self-identified Christian leadership. A census in May 1939, six years into the Nazi era and after the annexation of mostly Catholic Austria and mostly Catholic Czechoslovakia into Germany, indicates that 54% of the population considered itself Protestant, 41% considered itself Catholic, 3.5% self-identified as Gottgläubig (lit. "believing in God"), and 1.5% as "atheist". Protestants were over-represented in the Nazi Party's membership and electorate, and Catholics were under-represented. We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity - in all this vastness - there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. - Carl Sagan Pale Blue Dot speech Truly puts our lives into perspective and is quite humbling.

Fun fact about the blue dot image: Earth actually only takes up about a tenth of a pixel. Our entire existence reduced to a rounding error. And that was from only 0.00063 light-years away. The distance to Proxima Centauri, our second-closest star, is 3.9 light-years. It's obscene just how absolute huge space really is.

I find German history incredibly fascinating because the Germans and Germany were always there, but at the same time not and always different like a shapeshifter. Summarized - Rejects Roman annexation - Teutons defeat Rome, are often slapped in the face, but Rome generally fails to subdue them Create an empire that wasn't really an empire but somehow lived for 1000 years - Very special and unique The Kingdom of Prussia and hundreds of German states gangsta! before being defeated by one of history's greatest generals. defeats the French, unite into a new Empire Get a colonial Empire Fights the whole world two times Gets divided again Reunites again and is not allowed to be strong again. Also, a few German inventions: - Incandescent lamps (Heinrich Göbel 1854) - The Telephone (Johann Philip Reis 1859) - Dynamo and tram (Werner von Siemens 1866) - The 35mm camera (Oskar Barnack 1925) - Nuclear fission and atomic bomb (Otto Hahn - while Nazi Germany emigrated to the Americans of course. Are they lucky the Germans exist - 1938) - The ship chart (Jürgen Dethloff and Helmut Gröttrub 1969) - Periodic Table (Julius Luther Meyer 1864) - Jeans (Levi Strauss 1873) - The recorder, player - with which the first films were possible (Emil Berliner 1887) - Aspirin - which all great athletes used to feel used to relieve pain and which saved countless lives (Felix Hoffmann 1879) - Spark plug (Robert Bosch 1902) - Thermos flask (Reinhold Burger 1903) - the toothpaste (Ottomar Heinsius von Mayenburg) - The coffee filter (Melitta Bentz) - Cassette recorder (Fritz Pfleumer 1928) - Teabag (Adolf Rambold 1929) - The jet engines - Indispensable for all jets and rockets + First war rockets V1, V2 of the Nazis (Hans von Ohain 1929) - The Helicopter (Heinrich Focke 1936) - The first car (Carl Benz - With honorary mustache - 1886) - Computers (Konrad Zuse 1941) - Fanta (During the Nazi era - and yes, this Fanta) - First 3D film (also during the Nazi era) - NASA (due to thousands of German engineers and thinkers that the Americans needed) - Typewriter (Peter Mitterhofer - 1864)

I instead found that she's one of the rare people to not be completely confused by what was happening, because she knew about history. She was laughing at jokes that she wouldn't laugh at if she didn't have the historical context and reference. So many people watch this and never laugh because it's so confusing to them, they seem like they don't understand anything. Here, both of them knew most of that stuff, and granted there are a few things that are obscure enough so not a lot of people know about them because it's just… not being taught in school.

There's a misconception that a lot of people have with the term "survival of the fittest". It doesn't necessarily mean strongest, most athletic, most intelligent, etc. "Fittest" refers to the most fit for a particular environment, time, situation or circumstance to survive long enough to pass on your dna to an offspring. So an example like "Wall-E" doesn't negate "survival of the fittest". It turns out that convenience and comfort make for a pretty FIT situation to procreate (see world population growth post industrial revolution).
