The History of Warfare, Blood and Steel, throughout the ages there have been so many wars and battles, this historic series takes us through some of the major events that changed whole countries, whole continents. Many lives lost through loyalty and a desire to serve ones country. Fought over land, on the sea and in the air, the tales of bravery and heroism are written into our very existence. One of military history’s most famous battles also saw the death of one of its most colourful characters - the charismatic and flamboyant George Armstrong Custer. Desperate to win a victory to restore his flagging reputation, Custer trusted his luck once too often with disastrous consequences for the once-feted hero and the men of the Seventh cavalry. Never before have the Indian tribes won such a spectacular victory over the white man - but, as history reveals, it was to cost them dear.

Reno did not bolt because he'd lost a quarter of his men... He lost a quarter of his men because he bolted...rather than having a covered, fighting retreat as any thinking commander might... Instead, tired men on exhausted cavalry horses tried tried outrunning fresh Indians on fresh ponies. . The Sioux did not deserve to be attacked, because they were in traditional hunting grounds many days from any white settlements. They also did not deserve to have a callous and cynical order to "report to reservations" by a date in the depth of winter... Those who might have actually been notified could not have made it before early Spring...and those under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse not party to any reservation treaties in the first place. . They also did not deserve to have their treaty lands taken...by the expedient of starving reservation Indians until they signed the transfer... Even the U.S. Supreme Court has so found in later decades. But while the Sioux may have considered the Black Hills as "holy..." their old men certainly knew that they did not spring from that land... Rather...the Western Great Lakes. They got the Black Hills by driving all the original occupying tribes away by overwhelming force... YP

EVERY officer serving with Reno agreed that had they not withdrawn when they did, they all would have been massacred. The retreat to Reno Hill was correct, the execution was poor. But under the circumstances of being overwhelmingly outnumbered, maybe that's the best that could have been executed? It's easy to pass judgment 150 years after events.

A man, born and bred in the same village as i was, Garsington Oxfordshire England, won the Medal of Honour for his courage in this battle. His name was James Pym and he was with Major Reno. When he died in the 1890s, the army took his body back to lie among his mates in the Little Bighorn cemetery. There are still Pyms living in Garsington to this day.

Custer getting wiped out by Indians was the worst thing that could have happened to Indians everywhere. The US government woke up, allocated more money to the Indian wars, increased the size of companies to 100 men, and in addition to this according to my Time West book collection, more young men joined the army as avengers. Kinda like after Pearl Harbor but on a smaller scale. Custer getting wiped out guaranteed the Indians losing the Indian wars.

Douglas MacArthur was probably more concerned about his image more than Custer was. The Battle of Little Big Horn had many parallels to the Battle of Isandlwana. One other problem with the treaties is that not all the younger Cheyenne and Lakota were willing to abide and would continue raiding regardless. The count of non-combatants killed at the Washita is probably high though it did happen. The encampment at the Washita River is where the cavalry had tracked a raiding party to, with captives, peace-treaty notwithstanding. Hostage or "Human Shield" taking and burning of teepees, destruction of stores etc. had become a common practices by cavalry after the Washita raid including usage by Ranald "Bad Hand" Mackenzie, It was what was within their capabilities. . 6000 warriors at the Little Bighorn is probably over-assessed. You wouldn't need much more than 1500 for the 360 left under Custer's command after he split his command that day, once the distances favored the Warriors Henry and Winchester repeaters and their traditional weapons. The warriors at the Little Bighorn thought they were fighting General Crook again as born out by their testimonies and the taunts towards Reno's command regarding their Crow and Shoshone allies not being with them in numbers. Custer himself was probably unrecognizable with his hair having been short on this mission.

@@boycerobbins7847 Some of the Plains natives were especially troublesome as horse mounted and mobile and still raiding settlers. Settlers on the other hand, were pushing the bison herds away by their presence and effectively shrinking native hunting grounds. It had to come to conflict but the description "extermination" probably better fits what the Comanche tried to do to the Apaches in order to corner the horse trading market with Texas being the prime location for that. Not saying that wrongs weren't done by Cavalry and more so by Texas Rangers because those things did take place. I think it necessary though to keep things in perspective when interpreting history.. Weapons, btw, were obtainable as hunting rifles at legal trading posts, some inside reservation territory. Horses were actually relatively plentiful among Bison hunting Plains Natives through trading, theft and some captured in the Texas plains..Arrows, lances and long handled horseback tomahawks were lethal enough once the distances were closed. Natives weren't "rounded up" so much as forced to the reservation from lack of bison and horses when taken by the Cavalry.. Of the 2000 horses captured by Mackenzie at Palo Duro Canyon, approximately 600 were kept for the Cavalry and their native allies and the rest were destroyed. Mackenzie didn't have to "round up " Quahadi Comanche and Southern Cheyenne and Kiowa etc. He just waited for them to show up at the reservation in small groups or alone.

Reno and Benteen didn't know where Custer had gone? How many choices were there? All one has to do is read Reno's report a few days after the battle and pay attention to the timeline. EVEN BENTEEN at the inquiry stated that the position in the timber was better than the retreat position on the hill. Before retreating, Reno had lost less than five men. If the Sioux were completely overwhelming, why were the casualties on the 26th so low? If Benteen and Reno had followed orders, Custer's regiment likely would have survived.

Custer's movement at the river wasn't an attack and a repulse but a feint to relieve pressure on Reno and Benteen. We know this because Custer ordered Benteen to join him twice, not the other way around. Custer led the Indians away and established a defensive position around Last Stand Hill. This was Benteen's opportunity to attack the Indians from behind as they were changing direction. It would have been Custer's anvil to Benteen;s hammer. Yep Custer was that good.

Custer's fatal mistake was not informing Benteen there would be a further division of the command after Benteen was sent off on his left oblique. After receiving the order to bring the pack train, Benteen, like a good soldier, rode to the sound of the guns, believing he was going to Custer. Instead, he found Reno in dire straits with no knowledge of Custer's whereabouts. As Reno was the senior commander present, Benteen followed Reno's orders and by then it was too late to save Custer. It is arguable that no matter what, Custer still would have lost or been driven from the field, as was Crook a few days earlier. Remember, Crook had a vastly superior force, with Shoshone allies than Custer, and facing the same group of Natives, Crook thought it prudent to withdraw after fighting the Natives to a stalemate.

Everybody judges people from the past ,by looking through modern eyes. With modern morales and values and religious beliefs, we shouldn’t be judging the actions of the past, we are not qualified. And then trying to make people accountable for actions of certain peoples in the past,seems kinda stupid to me. Saying my family were Scottish,persecuted by the English and some even murdered by English. Also I have had relatives killed by Catholics in Ireland,should I condem all Catholics for their murder. That’s what I was told. I also had relatives,lived in Texas and went to Cali. For gold. The whole group were killed,not just killed but mutilated 7 members in my family. Should I hold all Indians responsible. The red man’s philosophy was exterminate the white man.every tribe that acquired land,didn’t just go buy it. No they slaughtered the tribe that controlled it . When one tribe fought another, the one that wins has no enemy left,they kill every man woman child,except for slaves.

Chance in hell it could have went any other way.. no doubt Custer had bad Intel and the warriors were determined to wipe these few soldiers out but it's rediculous to call it an epic battle when the outcome was certain once Custer commited . it' was a massacre same as Custer did to the Indians on previous occasions Turn about is fair play..

I believe there were more than 2000 warriors, significantly more. And some of them were better armed than the troopers. Terrain and numbers determined the outcome of this battle. As for 'massacre' or not, the Sioux and Cheyenne took no prisoners and they tortured or killed the wounded. When General Terry explored the abandoned camp they found the disembodied heads of three troopers, that were being displayed as trophies. Most of the bodies were horribly mutilated, Thomas Custer's head was beaten flat with a war club so that he was only recognizable by his clothing and a tattoo. Why his body was subjected to such violent defilement is anybody's guess. I salute the Warriors for their bravery and battle tactics, their treatment of the wounded and the bodies was beyond the pale. The Plains Indians played a tough game-against each other and against the Europeans. The massacres weren't one-sided, they went both ways. Very unfortunate the two sides couldn't have found more common ground and worked things out peacefully, but when two cultures are so extreme in their differences that's difficult.
@31terikennedy
@31terikennedy 3 ай бұрын
It didn't matter how many Indians there were or how well they were armed. They had no command and control. The large concentration at the Washita was the same at the LBH. General Terry intended Custer's cavalry as a strike force. BTW, Crooke's column was completely independent, no coordination was ordered or intended. Gatlings were pulled by condemned cavalry horses; they would have slowed the cavalry down so much the village would have been gone before they got there. The huge number of people and ponies made it impossible to stay in place for long, limited grazing and resources. Gatlings were good for defensive positions, would have been useful at the Wagon Box fight, but useless in a running fight over the rough terrain at Little Big Horn. They also took time to set up and find the range. Reno could've used them at his defense site, but there's no way he could've gotten them over the river and up the bluffs. Forget the Gatlings.
