Mike Duncan is like a no holds barred historian. He is able to present a lot of information, and to scrutinize to an incredible degree, while making comparisons.

I just starting listening to his best podcast, and as a scholar of history, I have to say that every time I hear him say "hello, and welcome to the history of Rome" I feel like I'm mentally coming over a rise and seeing a huge and ancient city coming into view, full of secrets and knowledge. He is an amazing narrator and speaker.

Mike is the bomb. HOR was so amazing. I only wish there was more details, it's very cliff notes style, but can be expected to pack all those years into under 200 podcasts. Excellent!

I’m almost 70 episodes into the Russian Revolution, and I have to say I’ve never been so enamored with history. I’m definitely planning on going back to previous revolutions. Duncan is very analytical in his account of history without editorializing, and of course he’s very entertaining.

I found history of rome about a year ago on you tube, hooked straight away. If I was at home I was listening to it non stop. As soon as I got home from work it was on until I went sleep listening to it. Just finished it for a second time and already considering doing it all again. I have a huge passion for history, especially early civilisations, and the level of detail, mixed with great storytelling and humour was, in my opinion, outstanding. I'm so glad it has won you awards, and when I've finished it for the 3rd time, I'll get on to revolutions. Well done and good luck for the future.

When it often comes to history and modern problems, it is incorrect to say that history repeats itself, History is merely poetry, things may look the same they might feel the same but they can never be the same.
@trevordaniels34444 жыл бұрын
Mike actually discusses this in a podcast with Dan Carlin and its pretty cool. He said it doesn't repeat, but it rhymes.

What a gift to this world Mike Duncan is. I have listened to him talk about Rome for hundreds, if not thousands of hours and I wish more would do the same and see the brilliant and harrowing similarities between the past and present.

It's interesting how not only did the growing elite destroy the Roman Republic, they still maintained a good amount of power afterwards, despite having to constantly carry favor with their new Emperor, and then over the course of the 500 years the people and families involved in that elite power structure became the nobility of medieval Europe (although with a lot of drift and the occasional assertion of a new ruling class of invaders). Like the whole deal with how upper classes destroy democracy and welfare is that they do it out of sheer pragmatism to accumulate and then protect their power, and in theory they can do it indefinitely across a hundred regimes of warlords or fascists or whatever unless you specifically remove their influence.

Yo, will you be a part of a website I’m looking to start? It is supposed to be educational. To inform those who are interested concerning important and controversial points in history. Following this the hope is that those who participate will take to civilized and logical debate following a host of issues. In essence I hope to form a community dedicated in the pursuit of learning from history, developing rational views, and practicing their ability to have those fundamental one to one or small family conversations. I believe will that this will some day lead us as a race to a more prosperous and enlightened future.

Closing on in listening to all his Rome and Revoluitons podcasts. Been a great pleasure. Favorites were South America and Mexico: inherently interesting and I'd known so little about either. France for me was a slog. My friend, who turned me on to Duncan a year ago, said he's really enjoying Byzantium

Just on the off chance that Mike reads this: thank you so much. You have changed my life. It would take a long time to explain why, but I would just like it if Mike knew that he helped me defeat depression that had afflicted me for 20 years and probably would have ended my life. I know I'm just saying this into the ether but just wanted to say it somewhere.
