The United States was expanding westward by the late 1800s, and the country's industrial base was looking for new opportunities. In southeast Missouri, a vast, untapped area existed that held enormous potential for the logging and agricultural industries. From this economic impetus came the Little River Drainage District, allowing for seven counties in southeast Missouri to become the agricultural powerhouse to the entire state. Dr. Nickell takes us back to the early 1900s, just after the construction of the Panama Canal, and tells how North America's largest swamp was drained.
