I have been all over this planet and in 2010 I chose Ellijay as my home for the rest of my life.

I have property there, its an awesome place. The falls are really cool in the winter when freezing, walking up and down the mountain side staircase is a real hard job. Panaroma apples is the store at the 7 minute mark, some great stuff to eat in there, fresh apple juice and home made apple pies, apple breads, canned jellys, pickles, relish, etc.. choc and ice creams, nice natural soaps,. Carters Dam at the lake is pretty big and you can drive across the top of it. Springer mountain is the pre trail start to the Appl. trail head, before the falls, fun ride thru the mountain woods to get there. Miles of forestry roads to ride jeeps and motorcycles thru the mountain woods. The apple festival is a huge mess, 10,000+ people come to a super small town and it blocks it up. Only did this mistake, 1 time. Coosawattee river resort a super cool place.

How is it? I am looking to move there in a couple months if I can pay the bills as self employed horticulturist…but I would change careers in a heartbeat to escape crazy California.

Ellijay is a great area for people who love mountains and nature, but also hate harsh long winters. Winter time highs in Ellijay are typically in the upper 40's and lower 50's. That's about as warm as you'll find for an Appalachian town, because Ellijay is at the far southern tip of that range. Great spot.

Anyone with any sense knows that a small town that has a 4 lane highway running through it is not the same as it once was and will never be again. The 2 lane infrastructure in and around town is overwhelmed everytime their is prediction of snow, the first time a leaf changes color, an apple blossom blooms, a new winery opens or it's one of the 7 days of the week. If you enjoy navigating bumper to bumper traffic, strolling the sidewalks with tourists or trying to find a stream to fish that isn't posted or full of people tubing, Ellijay is the place for you. Also, if you do move here and need a job, plenty of burger flipping jobs and the local chicken plant is always hiring, its not hard to find, its basically in the middle of town about a half mile from the waste water plant. Yee Haw Y'all!

An absolutely lovely (and under the radar) area of the country, is rural north Georgia, and towns like Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Helen, Hiawasee, etc. Incredibly lush forests, bubbling cascading creeks everywhere, low crime, sane home prices, tons of protected wilderness, old growth forest (if you know where to look), stunning vistas, and kind locals. Ellijay offers all this while still only 80 minutes from Atlanta, the largest airport on earth, etc. And winters in Ellijay (compared to most mountain towns) are short and reasonable. Lots of upper 40's and low 50's. Some 60's thrown in. A couple inches of snow is a big deal. It combines a mountainous environment without the brutal winters, lots of rain BUT lots of sun too. Not nearly as much drear as the northeast. Just a gem of an area.

Much like most of the north ga mountains this is no longer a sweet little town just another gated community bought up by out of staters and investors. Absolute shit show.
