Join The Indiana James as he embarks in rediscovering a lost African American cemetery in the middle of the woods in Southern Indiana. While literally constructing a railroad through Indiana, this route was actually used as part of the Underground Railroad system to help run-a-way slaves reach their freedom. Even though Indiana was a "free" state, there were still bounty hunters on the look out.

I’m from Wakarusa , Wyatt , and South Bend , our grandpa never told us the family in Olive township helped in the railroad . We found evidence. Downtown South Bend along the river has evidence of it as well . Grandpa was still afraid to tell after all those years. He owned and lived his entire life in the same farmhouse. He I guess could have not known he was born in 1908 but he could have . We found the evidence when we moved the chest freezer and behind it was a secret room with straw beds old fashioned toys and shackles that were cut . The cut shackles hit me hard I was 12 and it was very heavy what I was looking at . After we realized what we found there was so much pride knowing our people helped them not enslaved! I did my ancestry and found notes from a ladies church notes that coyly spoke of how president Lincoln was doing Gods work and it was about time and they would keep doing what they had been doing . The census confirmed during that same time period or before or after that there were no slaves being used .

Has any research/archeological digs been done? I love this, but until further research, I don't think it can 'absolutely' be declared to be a slave cemetery. There are many rock-slab unmarked pioneer graves - or even more recent; late 19th - early 20thc dirt-poor families. In my own family here in Kentucky. Either way, I agree you made a local historic find. :)

You are absolutely right. I was actually researching this Underground Railroad route last year before I got a job teaching film in South Korea. Another theory is that there was a cholera outbreak when the Irish workers were building the railroad and they were buried there but yet again I haven't been able to find any evidence to support this claim as well.

The word 'Underground' signifies 'off the beaten path' or 'unknown' while the word 'railroad' signifies 'route'. Any path leading north that would get the slaves to the north was part of the underground railroad. In this instance, the slaves just so happened to follow an unfinished railroad line heading north. Bounty hunters made it really tough to travel during the day but it wasn't really impossible. Thanks for watching!

After much thought...considering the many stones, is it possible that the doctor may have played some part in the demise of these slaves? @TheIndianaJames
@TheIndianaJames 4 жыл бұрын
One must understand that there was only one doctor in the area. There was a cholera outbreak amongst the Irish railroad workers and the ones that died might have been buried here too. During those days Catholics and Protestants weren't buried together so there's a good chance that some of these unmarked graves are some of the Irish immigrants. As for Dr. Hutchings having bad intentions is very rare since the organizers of the Underground Railroad knew of his help and generosity towards the movement. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

@@TheIndianaJames very interesting. I wonder if Dr. Hutchins kept any ledgers. It's very sad, if in fact there are bodies there, that they remain nameless.

@@DOLfirst Dr. Hutchings was the town doctor for Lexington, Indiana. In the town of Lexington they have a cemetery where on one side Protestants were buried and on the other side Catholics were buried. Any 'local citizen' would have been buried in this official cemetery. However, Dr. Hutchings lived around two miles out of town on a small farm surrounded by wilderness. In the woods on a small hill is where these unmarked graves remain. His involvement in the Underground Railroad probably was kept hidden for safety concerns; therefore this cemetery was kept a secret as well. You had bounty hunters chasing down the run-a-way slaves because the slave owners had bounties put out on them. I don't think Dr. Hutchings wanted his life to be in jeopardy or house burnt down or a burning cross on his lawn.

@@TheIndianaJames yes, those working the underground railroad were certainly taking great risks. It was a wonderful thing, all of them working secretly together. It's also a shame that it was necessary.

I has been told that thus was where Hutchings tended black cholera victims at his summer residence up that creek. Burial was here on the hill because white people did not want them buried in their city cemeteries.

It’s so good to see a white person so interested in trying to uncover the Underground Railroad. Shows like this tells me that there are good people in all races. During this time when trump has stirred up hatred, love has been a reuniting mark of humanity. Love never fails. Praise Jah.

LOL I gather you don't know much about flowers. Easter lily bulbs have to be dug up in the Fall, and brought in the house. Those are daffodils you saw.

They sure are daffodils! But in Southern Indiana these 'daffodils' come up right before Easter and the locals, over generations, have referred to them as 'Easter Lillies', even though they are daffodils. It's a local/regional thing. Thanks for watching!

They're daffodils. In Southern Indiana these flowers pop up just before Easter and everyone calls them as Easter Lilies around here. I guess it's a cultural thing.

This is a real cemetery located on the grounds of Dr. Hutchings estate. All signs signal it to be from the Underground Railroad. Unless there was a professional archeological excavation with DNA analysis we won't 100% know

There was no railroad here at this location or there was no railroad involved in the Underground Railroad? The Underground Railroad was any form of path that led to freedom. In this case this was an unfinished railroad that the slaves used to get north to freedom...making this unfinished railroad part of the 'Underground Railroad'.
