My father is from San Antonio. I remember seeing Alamo Village when I was a kid....like mid 70s. Talk about in the middle of nowhere. IIRC, the Alamo they built was 100% accurate, as near as they could tell from maps and descriptions from the time of the battle, to the real Alamo as it was during the battle except for one thing...size. Alamo Village is only 2/3rds the size of the real Alamo.

On a visit to relatives in Texas, when it came time to leave, my aunt gave me the choice, "go to Alamo Village, (where they'd just made the movie), or to the real Alamo? In those days you wore your Sunday best to fly anywhere. You can guess where I went (to save my clothes), yes I went to the Mission, and held the doors open for many ungrateful tourists!

The last time I visited Alamo ranch, it was packed, cantina was serving meals and drinks and there was gun fights in the streets. I hope they can bring it back to life. Its worth maintaining its history

Would love to see it up and running again with shows and eats and drinks and maybe a a little history thrown in as well, would a full scale re-enactment be possible? Nevermind, just a dream of a kid that learned the Alamo from Fess Parker.

My wife and I were there when it was still open. We were the only ones there at the time and they did a gunfight just for us. Walked all over the set climbed one of the ramps up on the walls. It was pretty awesome.

Richard a long long time family friend to me and my wife's family. Still see him around town. I miss watching his cowboy gun battles out at Alamo village.

Visited in early 1990's. It was still an active movie set. The day I visited a Japanese movie company was filming a "Western". It was funny as Hell to see a 5' tall Japanese actor dressed in fancy cowboy garb with two "six guns" in his gunbelt swaggering down the Alamo Village dirt main street speaking his lines in Japanese.

It is, Laughlin AFB. Served there in the very early 80s, and never went here. I missed it.

My hero of heroes I would have loved to have met him wiwhen I was in the cattle feed industry we delivered Feed to his small feed lot in Arizona at that time his son ran the ranch but it was still neat to be on something that John Wayne had owned

The land belonged to Shahan but John Wayne had the set built to his specifications. Some of the scenes were shot at other locations. The river scenes etc and a lot of movies used Fort Clark which has a lots of older buildings.

There is nothing out there besides Alamo village and the very small town of Bracketville & Alamo village is about 8 miles from it. To get to the old movie studio it self, you still have to drive about a mile or so on a dirt road, into the woods from the main road. It really is as your going back in time. Very majestic, beautiful scenery.

It's not "John Wayne's" set. It was Happy's! There have been several restorations to Alamo Village since the Wayne Movie many years ago.

The Alamo village would have existed (somewhere) without Happy - but not without Wayne, ipso facto. The entire set (town and fort) on the Reimer Ranch west of Austin burned down some years ago. But it was not built as a permanent set, like AV was.

Where are the big money people ? This is a part of history and why isn't state of Texas doing something ? Where are all these rich Texans , oil people , sports ? Almost 200 Texans fought and died for the land that these people made their fortunes off ! This place is Heaven to the conservatives who believe all those Alamo lies, fables and legends of the Alamo. However, the real Alamo is where it is at folks! That is where Davy Crockett surrendered to the Mexican soldiery, only to be executed within moments. Where Travis committed suicide at the north wall, when he saw all was lost, and James Bowie died hiding under his cot covers, as he was killed. Some heroes' folks, as you all will agree! What we need at the real Alamo in ole' San Antone is a Memorial to the 123 Mexican soldiers who died there defending their country from armed & dangerous illegal alien invaders from the States!

As for your "leftist revisionist" statement, this only proves that the cover-up was created by conservative so-called historians, in order to butter up the Alamo defenders in a good light, and not the Mexican soldiers who were just defending their homeland from a gang of armed & dangerous illegal aliens from the States. YES, REMEMBER the Alamo folks, a MEXICAN victory for all time! Soon there will be a Memorial there to honor those 120 Mexican soldiers who died there defending their country. BTW, it makes me proud to see Texans celebrate a Mexican victory every year folks! Makes me proud of them all.
