I disagree with the decision here. The knuckle guard can be corrected with no change to the blade itself. But the other guy's blade actually chipped. Blade damage is far worse than a knuckle guard that is only slightly too close to the hand. You can't fix the chip without taking a lot of the blade material away.
@redfinale
@redfinale 4 жыл бұрын
first blade might have chipped but it still outperformed on the cut test, but a damaged blade performing better than an undamaged blade AND with less design flaw, it was more clear that the first blade was the better of the two to the judges

Winners sword seemed easier to use and got the lighter claim as well. Plus the guard, sharp edge is important but only one part.
@judgedredd2039
@judgedredd2039 4 жыл бұрын
The Guard might be able to be corrected but the competition is about the state that it was turned in in not about what can be done with it in the future. The state the blades guard was turned in with was the failing point in the blade at that time. Up till the end it was any ones game but the judges felt the flaw in the guard was enough to out weigh the chip and roll in the other blade.
@brettleisy356
@brettleisy356 4 жыл бұрын
the lightness can be adjusted with a slight grinding, the guard can be adjusted, the performance of the blade itself is a lot to do with the tempering which can be iffy at best to re-do. for some mild "discomfort" to just happen to fit or not fit the judges hands, I have to say the blade itself outperformed more comfortable guard. if in a dire situation I would give up a little comfort to know my blade wont roll, chip, or nick up to bad.

People who say they disagree with the judges’ decision are not considering how big of an issue a guard made of lead is. Perhaps the judges should have elaborated on this instead of just mentioning a little knuckle rub, or even tested the guard itself. A rule about what materials are allowed would also help. You could bend a lead guard back and forth by hand with very little effort (funnily enough, eliminating that pesky knuckle rub), and a blade would easily cleave through it. It was never made of lead historically and should not have been of lead here. It will not do what it is supposed to do, thus it is not fit for purpose. As for a blade with nicks or rolls, it’s not as big of a deal in most cases provided it doesn’t lead to a crack. As you can see, it still performed well. You’ll find similar damage on antique swords.
