Gotta give Eric credit: he made a unique blade that was, overall, effective. He kept getting worried that it was going to break, but it held up and the judges admitted that it was a nice creation. While the sharp pommel on the second guy’s knife certainly makes it more tricky to wield as a hand to hand combat weapon, it almost doubles the chances of dealing damage when thrown. Overall I would say it’s not a design flaw, but is merely specialized towards a different purpose.

If you let Steel cool slowly, the carbon and iron rearrange themselves in a uniform pattern which makes steel soft. If you suddenly cool Hot steel in oil or water, carbon gets trapped between the iron atoms and forms irregular grain/pattern which makes it hard. Results will make the steel hard and brittle; reheating [tempering]the steel will release some stress, ideally, to a springy steel type. Tough enough to take beating, hard enough to keep a sharp edge.
