How fascinating! what a treat to hear President Taft and Ms Nightingale and Mr George for the first time. I've heard the others before, but hearing those earlier recordings was so impressive. It's remarkable how clear even the early recordings are, and each of these clips have interesting content, as well. Thanks for sharing these!

If only people had listened to Taft then, millions of people would not have died in WW1. Thank you! I didn't know anyone had recorded Florence Nightingale!!! 😱

President Taft sounded surprisingly modern, given that he lived during the late 1800s and early 1900s. He would not at all sound out of place in today's world!

I have a handwritten letter from Eleanor Roosevelt. She wrote back to support my grandmother who was a younger and sudden widow. Grandmom was trying to be appointed the post master in her town, which she won !

You can hear our British roots in people born in 1800s. English speech still sounded slightly British. Thank you so much for this post!

This was actually a thing called the mid Atlantic accent, which was considered at the time the proper way of speaking, particularly by the upper class and intelligentsia. It was a trained accent, they learned it, not native, no child was born speaking it. The average American would sound much more similar to today's accent.

William Howard Taft really surpsied me. Seeing pictures of him, you would assume he would sound like that. But instead he sounded more similar to Kennedy.
