She was placed in isolation while they tried to treat the C. diff. She was then given three weeks to live. The hospital pumped her with so much medication and refused her water, etc. We didn’t know this because she was in isolation. She was still alive six weeks later, despite being treated like someone overstaying their welcome. She was moved to a hospice, where she lived for another six weeks. However, when she was moved to the hospice, there were no traces of her ever having C. diff. She could have lived if she had been given a pacemaker, but the hospital made the decision that she wasn’t worth it.

My 83-year-old father, a cancer patient, was told in July 2022 that he had six months to live. By late August his was bedridden and needed 24-hour care on a professional level. After great persuasion, he agreed to go to a hospice. This meant he would never return to the house he had lived in since 1970, so it was a highly emotional milestone for him. En route to the hospice, he made an offhand remark to the attendants riding with him that he wasn't sure he wanted to live anymore. In accordance with Canadian law, this was brought to the attention of my sister and me. We were told that if he made similar statements, he would automatically be considered for the assisted-suicide program. He never made another such statement, and his life ended naturally a month later. This bill looks like it has been purposefully made very restrictive, such that there will soon be calls for it to be revised and extended to more and more cases. It is a foot in the door for more and more normalised, medicalised suicide. It is a sad day, one of many such disgraceful days for parliament. After all the sanctimony about protecting the elderly from covid, the people in power reveal how much they really care.

I agree, its an abomination. Many sick, old, dying people will be frightened by this. So to all us right thinking people who are put on the position of deciding, we must look after our vulnerable family and let God take them when it is the correct time for the soul to leave the body, do we make murderers of doctors or nurses or encourage sick or ill to commit suicide. It is a very dark time we are living through. Lets shine a light because darkness cannot survive in the presence of light. Love from Glasgow Scotland ❤❤❤

What is the position when claiming on a life insurance policy. Assisted dying is a form of suicide in that you have died before your time by consent.

Believe me, it's even worse in Canada; you can be volunteer (and be immediately accepted) for what's euphemistically called 'assisted death' just for saying you're depressed and 'unresponsive to conventional treatment'. The same will happen in Britain; it's only a matter of time.

A heartfelt reflective and lamentable piece in The Telegraph from well over 30years ago made such a profound impression on me that I tore it out and kept it for some years in my bedside cabinet. Sir David Steel had written how his abortion law had changed over time to allow practices not originally voted and debated for.

While it's true this has a slippery slope potential, the other side of the argument is that many terminally ill people suffer from pain and indignity and would prefer to die sooner with dignity rather than waiting in agony or having to travel alone to Switzerland. We can surely devise a law and means for dying mercifully that does not get abused by greedy relatives or an overburdened NHS!

It's a highly emotional, emotive subject on both sides of this debate. Personally, having watched my dad die of MND, i think people of sound mind, maybe through a living will while they are of sound mind, should be given the choice. Living for the sake of living, when your body stops working but you're of sound mind, or you're in agony, despite the meds, while being eaten away by cancer, a close friend of mine was in this situation earlier this year...I'd rather choose my own way of leaving this life.

I was perfectly satisfied with how it was before. Anyone has to read a book written by a doctor to know what I mean. The issue I take with this is 2 days ago it was an even split between what MPs were saying on intentions for the votes and a good number were people that were on the fence. How hundreds of people can vote in favour for a bill of this kind with these kinds of consequences, that they were undecided on hours ago, is beyond me.
