Johnston's strategy was that of Longstreet's. Both men saw the futility of frontal attacks and sought other ways to avoid it. Their minds were having a plan of fighting in where they would find ground suitable for their men and attack the enemy. Davis made many mistakes.

Davis made many mistakes, thank goodness. He seems one of most stubborn statesmen in our history

As ever thank you for an informative presentation. I was especially interested in Mackall who proved to be quite a fine man and some of the internal politics and relationships

Johnston asks for help…he doesn’t get it…he tells of the perilous state of the army …Davis doesn’t believe him….then Davis is mad when he doesn’t receive the desired results….Johnston was in a lose lose situation

Hood was a snake for sure, when the war was over and both were pointing fingers at each other their opponent Sherman sided with Johnston's side of the story; as for Jefferson, he was clearly a poor poor choice for a Commander in Chief but that's a luxury we have in hindsight, no one could had predicted that a West Point educated former Secretary of War would so soundly outclassed in that position by a self-made country lawyer.

Davis was absolutely delusional about the state of the confederacy during the last few weeks of the war….this makes me believe he may have been delusional the entire time

The south never really stood a chance of winning... their only path to victory was a constant stalemate on the battlefield and having the North grow tired and eventually sue for peace. After Vicksburg and Gettysburg... the writing was clearly on the wall.

@@kevinhart8339 The south was a few months out from winning with that strategy. They just needed to get to the presidential election, and with a stalemate, Mclelland would have won. Sherman, taking Atlanta, made the North believe the could win, and Lincoln won the election. To me Sherman is the one who saved the union

In the Centennial History of the Civil War, Catton says that Sherman and Johnston did not know about Lincoln's assassination when they negotiated their peace agreement. Grant personally traveled to Sherman's headquarters to tell him about it and explain why the agreement was unacceptable. Sherman then told Johnston.

Good video. Johnston was accused of not being aggressive enough on several occasions most notably after his ( arguably)tactical victory at Kennesaw Mountain. After Hood recklessly fought a series of battles which destroyed the Army of Tennessee as effective fighting force ,Johnston eventually regained command .One problem with setting the historical record strait is that by putting pen to paper it is like engraving it in stone and may be seen as evidence in a rebuttal. Lee left no personal accounts so everything is surrounded by the aura and myth of his reviting personality and generalship .It is all second hand accounts that has over the years glossed over many of military and personal shortcomings verging on idolatry.Inspector General Samuel Cooper ,who outranked Lee, papers were burned by his family and I am sure it saved many of the generals reputation .It however made him virtually unknown.

@@MichaelDeutschmanI agree. It sounds good idea at first to concentrate everything at Atlanta but you are opening the states of Mississippi and Alabama to invasion. Also you are leaving the back door to Atlanta open.

When Johnstone was replaced with Hood, Sherman was pleased. Johnstone had stalled him long and effectively. Lee should have said plainly to keep Johnstone.bur he was too polite as usual.

Every time I watch a new video on the civil war, I find another reason to believe that Braxton Bragg was just the worst. Jefferson Davis was a close second. The Confederacy didn't have a chance to win at this point of the war, but those two put a boot on its neck.

Johnston’s Strategy was the only one that had a possibility of success. He’s definitely the best General they had in the West. But Davis, maybe without meaning to, consistently undermined Johnston. Distrust, Vague Authority, and Inadequate Means, combined to almost guarantee that Johnston would fail.

Your series here all them a good many things not heard of before.Puts things into a different light. Always knew the mistakes of Bragg, but the dislike poltics of n between Johnston n Beauregard and Davis. Sheads a whole new light on thing's .. that alone cost the Confederacy. Its a proable had Johnston stayed i. Command Atlanta may have held out till after the election.More likely had Johnston had better n more Calvary as he asked that might been possible..or A possible counter attack on Sherman more than ever was n if was Lincoln might have lost the election. I have to ask opinion.. Seeing ad Beauregard wasnt considered n Bragg wouldnt have went by.. Whom else might have been a better replacement for Johnston??

@@michaelwilson9986 the only general that would have been able to take command, other than Johnston, would probably have been William Hardee, but I don't know if he would have been much better.
