I was a ranger from 1979 to 2009 before I became a lookout. Worked in 4 towers before getting replaced by cameras. I read a lot, kept the places clean. Did crossword puzzles. There were visitors, and fires once in a while. Anywhere from only 4 to 35 initial reports per fire season. I had 13 initial reports one day. All lightening caused. I had flash cards above the windows of my lookout. About 100 of them. Landmarks. Name of feature, bearing, distance, legal description, elevation. One LO, I had a card that said, That's Not Supposed to be There, and another that said, Rocking Like a Hurricane. All from real life situations. This is a pretty good video.

"Firewatch" brought me here, too. I'm also stunned by how much this announcer's Canadian accent is reminiscent of the Translatlantic accent of most newscasters of the era.

Hello!! I just came across your video while doing some research on our local fire towers. I’m wondering if I could use a few parts in a video I plan on putting together? I’ll credit your video of course!! Thank you for sharing this, it’s great! Take care and stay well

The BCWS is still quite the well oiled machine but I think we use satellites to spot fires now

Those Canadian firefinders are different then the Osbourne viewfinder used in the US. Both serve the same purpose though. To get a bearing to a fire. Distance comes from experience and local landmarks. The best lookouts I know, were women.

Given that it was made in 65, I'll forgive the films overuse of a male ranger. All my knowledge comes from the Lookout Cookbook, but when this was made one woman was in her 35th season as a lookout. I don't know if I could manage one lighting storm in one, let alone decades

PS. That photo comparison thing never worked very well. Another piece of important equipment. Window cleaner and a squeegee.

lets see satellite note: (satellites have dead spots and its not acceptable) technology replaces fire lookouts established by experienced forestry engineers to have visual accuracy in identifying a fire as it happens. there is no better way and coupled with the giant water bombers on contract to put out any fires across BC to Alberta.these fire fighting planes were developed by the logging corporations holding extremely valuable ,vast timber resources on the west coast of BC. and they did not want to lose them to wildfires and they succeeded to the day they finished the logging operations. those water bombers were then purchased by a fire fighting contractor and successfully put out most of the dangerous fire outbreaks . then the govt. decides they want to cut costs and shut down the bombers and fire lookouts .not long after the result is the new fire economy and huge payments to the BC govt. which just before this was teetering on insolvency but not anymore as emergency federal money fills the coffers and so now we are in perpetual state of emergency /economy. the destruction of the Fraser canyon hwy.1 from washouts due to the burnout forest above and flash flooding resulted and the administration should have anticipated this problem with installation of extra heavy rip rap on the bridge crossing footings to divert the washing out of the footings its just one bungling mess after another. and if anyone cared about the so called climate they would stop burning the average 98 billion gallons of jet fuel in the passenger jet industry and have aerial monitoring stations to see if there are any reductions of co2 and then proceed to work on abatement science to reduce it until they get-er done. engineers and scientists are clearly just tools for subjugation control of everyone . put electric car technology where it works best ....areas with mild temperatures and city/metropolitan areas. we are still in the dark ages with a few trinkets and fanciful things based on convenience to satiate the lazy human🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 . frontier law is about to rise like the phoenix if they don't back down........crystal ball says so.
