There was a veteran of the 2nd Boer War who went on to serve as a senior officer in the 1st World War who wrote in 1921 that if the British had not fought the Boers in South Africa in 1899 - 1902 and had entered the 1st World War without learning all the lessons they had had to learn in South Africa , which entailed almost completely overhauling the way the Army was trained and run , then the 1st World War would truly have been all over by Xmas 1914 and the British would have lost it. He wrote in his memoirs saying that 'Paul Kruger was the best friend the British Army ever had'. For the implications of losing the 1st World War would have been infinitely more catastrophic than losing a war in South Africa. Interesting.It was a kick up the arse needed just at the right time. Also recall listening to a veteran of that war being interviewed sometime in the 1950s i think it was on the radio i recall him saying '' oh lord, those buggers ( Boers) could shoot..lol

I reckon the Boers and the the rural (Southern) Americans are somewhat the same. They're armed, know how to shoot and ride horse. Living in either texas, queensland or South Africa in those days would have been hard, probably still is (as a farmer anyway).

You say early in the video that the British "should really have learned lessons from the American Revolution." The British in fact had learned the value of riflemen and sharpshooters from the Americans and used units such as the 60th Rifles and 95th Rifles to great effect throughout the Napoleonic Wars. The trouble was while during the Napoleonic Wars most troops were still armed with short range smooth-bore muskets deployed in lines and columns, rifles had a great advantage in range and accuracy at this time and trained soldiers could pick off officers almost at will. By the Crimean War and later still the First Boer War, rifles were readily available to all soldiers but the tactics for using them hadn't advanced much. Consequently lines and columns of troops all armed with accurate, long range and quick firing rifles were having at each other on European battlefields and in the American Civil War too causing enormous casualties. The Red Cross was set up to help deal with the huge amount of wounded soldiers around this time. The Boers themselves as you say were expert marksmen, they had to be, and the ponderous formations of British troops made for excellent targets. In the second Boer War at the battle of Spien Kop the Cheshire Regiment was almost annihilated by the Boers, the vast majority shot through the head.

Thanks for an excellent summary of that part of the South African history. The "Boers", however, were not only Dutch descendants. Some French (the Huguenots) and Germans (and few other Europeans), immigrated to South Africa after the Cape Colony was established and then formed the "Boer" population who started the Groot Trek. Dutch was initially the "mother's milk" who fed Afrikaans, but other languages also influenced the forming of Afrikaans as an independent language.

A bit of background history info here that few people know: The Boer War started when the English tried to hang 3 Boers accused of theft in my hometown of Potchefstroom. The ropes snapped 3 times and then the British decided to shoot them and so the rebellion started. To this day there is a monument/laager just outside Potchefstroom. And it was also a gentleman's conflict where they took a break in the middle of the day from fighting, had coffee and tea together and resumed fighting after.

As I live in the US theres alot of history that they dont teach us & though some college classes mention the 2nd Boer War as the immediate precurser to WW1 they only refer to it as the Boer War & no mention is made that another war in the exact same area took place a decade earlier. Its not an American battle at all but there was at least one movie about 1930s England when an objectionable Prime Minister brought on the Germans that he heard of a barbaric prison camp which was the prototype for Hitler's execution and extermination facilities. An ambassador kindly reminded him of a UK tactic during the 1900 to 1903 war which was along those lines.

In addition Brit soldiers hung around Boer farm houses for the good food the likes of which they had never had. The rebellion of 1914 is one of the most important and most underrated parts of the Afrikaner history. That actually defined to a large extent the future of the Afrikaner in South Africa and the situation they are currently in. This explains why South west Africa (now Namibia) was part of South Africa for a long time. This explains how and why the political system in South Africa came to resemble the British one. This part of our history is not taught in schools, most school who still teach Afrikaner history focuses on the Groot Trek etc. If you are interested, read "rebelspoor" by l.j. Bothma. A video by Hilbert would be great!! (Maybe after the 2nd boer war video :P)

love anything about this period my grandad was a nsw mounted in the period 1900 -1902 wounded twice and survived,never knew him sadly his medals are at the museum Victoria barracks, I have duplicate, he died in 1930 his serial number was 99 .my dad never spoke about him?

nice video.. makes me think of the books of Herman Charles Bosman, he writes about a leopard in one of his stories, I think in the collection Mafeking Road & Other Stories, anyway the leopard is causing consternation in the district, everyone is trying to kill the leopard as the creature is killing cattle. Anyway the protagonist claims that the amount of shooting going on reminds him of the first Boer war and the amount of running away reminds him of the second Boer war. wonderful short stories, I would recommend them. Another fantastic book about the second Boer war is Denys Reitz's memoir "On Commando", one of the best books I have ever read about a personal account in a war.
