Great as long as your battery is not shorting from too much water. A manual bilge seems like a good backup too.

Definitely good to have an independent spare. We were out fishing in the Tampa Bay channel one day last year, we were standing on the rear deck and noticed the stern was lower than usual. I opened the hatch and the bilge was full. Turns out the automatic float switch died. I ran the pump manually, so nothing big, but at that time I created separate spare one from this old bilge pump.
