When Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri scored the equalising and winning goals for Switzerland against Serbia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, both players celebrated by performing the double-handed eagle gesture, landing them a hefty fine and causing a minor diplomatic crisis.
Outside of the Balkans, however, few people paid any notice or even really understood what it meant.
So ahead of Switzerland and Serbia meeting in another decisive group stage tie, this time at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, HITC Sevens takes a look at why that celebration in Russia was so controversial, the context behind it, and the build-up to this game.

Hillariously, in this game at the wc 2018, not only did Xhaka and Shaqiri celebrate with this gesture, but also Stephan Lichtsteiner (the most swiss swiss person you‘ll ever likely to see) in support for the other 2 getting boo‘d through the whole game. He was the captain of the swiss nationalteam and this was almost a bigger story in the country than the other 2 doing it. Fun-Fact

After WW2 Germany moved on and at least apologized the people on this earth of what they caused, serbia on the other side let alone milion and bilion of crimes they commited through the history but the ugly truth is that they haven't been punished yet, justice is not done here and they didn't even apologize for killing milions of unarmed civilians. To anybody who reads this, serbia and its people are mental i've met serbian people and no matter the age they have this kind of mentality to hate and kill. But as you saw today ... it only takes 2 Albanians from Kosovo to shut their mouths promoting racism and violence.

I love that Alfie isn't afraid to talk politics and sport because he also understands that sports have been intrinsically tied to politics since the founding of the Olympics in ancient Greece or the coliseums and chariot races of Rome. Are sports better without politics? Absolutely. But at least Alfie doesn't shy away from the inconvenient truth. Much respect.

Well, I think its pretty hard to even state that last point as almost anything can be deemed as political. It completely depends on what definition of politics you quote, and your own personal beliefs. As someone who went through the the war after the collapse of Yugoslavia i have to say that everything you said here is true, and am surprised that you are so well informed about this. And even though i am not Albanian, while watching the game and how players from Kosovo were booed throughout the entire game, i was so glad that both of them scored, and not just that but that Shaqiri scored the second goal on such a way and in 90th minute. Also something interesting to add. While Serbian team was prepairing for a trip to Russia, Serbian president said to the team that he wishes them luck and good result, and especially that they have to beat Switzerland. Obviously you know why he said that, because of Albanians in their team.

I‘m from Switzerland and - as you can imagine - many swiss conservatives critisized and vilifyied Xhaka and Shaqiri for their celebration, questioning their alliance to Switzerland. I find conservatives getting triggered quite funny, even though especially Xhaka again had to face a lot of backlash and hate, wich was sad to see. Personally I believe it‘s perfectly fine to have one heart for two countries. Serbians really trashed and disrespected our Swiss-Albanian boys through media prior to the game, so I was happy to see them getting redemption. Also very good banter.

I’m sorry, but the ‘Albanian flag’ that interrupted the game in 2014 was not just that. It was a flag showing the concept of Greater Albania, which is highly contraversial and a sign og the exact extreme nationalism, you describe Serbia having portrayed… I’m sorry Alfie, but this detail was very important, and you glossed over it very lightly… Also, you failed to mention that the Albanians came to Kosovo during the Titos reign in the 60s and 70s, and that the Serbs simultaniously were forced to move… I understand that this topic is highly contentious, but that is the exact reason why it’s important to present it in a objective an nuanced way…

If ANY group starts fighting another or fighting to break away, I will destroy them, and you know damn well the other ethnicities within the armed forces will be all too happy to carry out even the most brutal orders against you." He must have been one terrifying and impressive individual. Say what you want about him and his methods, he kept things calm for over 30 years. I live in an area where refugees from virtually every ethnic group migrated during the breakup and I've asked numerous folks about Tito. I've yet to meet anyone from that region who doesn't still admire him.

To be fair, as someone that has no connection with anybody from countries of the former Yugoslavia, it wasn't entirely Serbia that targeted civilians. Serbian civilians were also targeted throughout the Yugoslav Wars. The issue is other ethnicities seem to been targeted more, with Bosnian, Albanian and Kosovar victims being higher. That gives a false narrative that it was entirely Serbs who targeted civilians and committed war crimes, Serb victims are overlooked, and fuels the feeling of victimhood and mistrust of the West that Serbs have.

Then imagine the UN immediately deciding to nationalize Ruhr country as an actual country and there is absolutely nothing you are allowed to do against is while these belgians take that important land away from you despite them moving in there in the last 50 years. also, many people said it but i'll say it again, that drone flag in 2014 is NOT the flag of albania, it's the flag of the ultranationalistic "greater albania" where albanians want to claim territories of multiple surrounding countries, including serbia, greece, north macedonia etc. it's a clear and blatant provocation and is actually exactly what you're claiming serbs are doing. it's much more important and sinister than the way you painted it. that's why more research - by asking people actually involved with both sides of such a big political question - matters.

The very important difference is that that flag was not used by the Albania NT players or staff, unlike the Serbian flag. Albania's borders today were decided by other people in the London conference and they left more than half the Albanian population outside the borders in 1912. That's why North Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece and Serbia even have Albanian minorities. It's why Kosovo exists. Albanian don't want to be ruled by other people. Watching this video, as a Serb, i can at least say that i appreciated the effort that was put up for the making of this video, up until the 19th minute. Up until that point the video lacked only small parts of the story and got some facts wrong, like that drone flag being the Kosovan flag. For those of you wondering it wasn't, it was the flag of the so called 'Greater Albania', which claims the neighboring territories of Greece, Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia. From that point onwards, the narrative was less and less shaped by facts and got very subjective, to say the least. Even disregarding those 'mistakes', (if at all possible) this video couldn't have possibly succeed in doing justice to the whole story in less than 30 minutes. It almost makes me wonder if the whole purpose of it was to push a certain narrative.

The described event where disgusted NATO bombed Serbia to intervene in a humanitarian catastrophe is similar to the Russian justification of the Ukraine invasion and its denazification. It's only that history is written by winners. And it is amended to fit the desired narrative. The truth that is hard to find is that the first report of "Račak" described it as a confrontation between army forces and the terrorist organization UCK. They were not civilians. Yes, the Kosovo liberation army was internationally recognized as a terrorist organization. It had a goal to fight for independence, even though bringing chaos to the Serbian population and provoking a response and further international intervention. Of course, the civilians suffered, and I'm ashamed of any civilian casualty that happened in the name of Serbia. But the other side did just the same things. No international help was provided for Serbs, and no outcry to stop the terrorist organization. It's easy to find that the current Kosovo government was involved in organ trade during that war. Financing terrorist efforts through organs of innocent civilians. How many Serbs fled Kosovo in the end? Why? It just pains me to see that otherwise rational people don't see the parallel. How are those lies and justifications for NATO bombing different from the ones said now about Ukrainians? Are your governments the only ones telling the real truth with no propaganda?

"No international help was provided" Didn't Greece provide humanitarian help to Serbia during the Kosovo war? No Serbs ever lived in Kosovo before the London treaty, it has been a land inhabited by albanians before the slavic invasions to the balkans, and even though the slavic managed to occupy different countries and change their culture and languages, still albanian remains as one of the ancient ones and a totally different branch in the indo european languages. So how does Serbia expect for kosovo albanians to not react and fight for their freedom and right of birth? How many albanians in Kosovo fled their home and didnt hear a word for months from their sons in war? How many women did serbians rape? With what right? Serbia expects for Kosovo to be assimilated and history erased, but that is not possible. They have already done too much damage to Bosnia and Kosovo and the whole region, it certainly can not be everyone else’s fault, therefore it was necessary for NATO to intervene and help Kosovo achieve freedom. Of course I think war crimes have been committed by all parties involved, but trials are already deciding who should be punished for that.

Best football channel by miles. Keep up the good, and important work. Croatian fans jeered Serbian background Canadian keeper Borjan too on their game. Fifa is investigating currently. This Balkan nationalism stuff seems to never end sadly. No hate! Football for all!

The Balkans (due to their unique geographic position) were pretty much the melting pot of different civilizations and empires (Slavs, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Habsburgs, Napoleon, Russians and British). That explains why there's so much trouble even to this day.

This video is so intentionally made to provide misleading information and present one side as victims. Lets go step by step: 1) 140.000 people killed in Bosnian war is not a true number! Real number and even official number provided by the UN estimates this on 100.000 victims (including both soldiers and civilians on all sides) BUT from that number large number of killed were also Serbs and Croats (about 40%) although the most of loses were on Bosnian Muslims side. He skipped to say real numbers and which groups were involved there in conflict. 2) Albanian "refugees" to Switzerland in the 80s and start of the 90s were mostly economical migrants who had their families already living over there like in general all other ethnic groups in ex-Yugoslavia. He wanted to represent how all of them were tortured in Kosovo while forgetting to say that during 80s Serbs had multiple protests against Albanians who started to harass them in many cases burning their houses or even killing them while they were working in the fields etc (one of the reasons why Milosevic gains support from the local Serbs back then). 3) WW1 skipping important fact that Albanians in Kosovo itself were divided over supporting Serbs and being opposite to them. 1916 when Bulgarians, Austrians and Germans jointly broke into Serbia those who opposed Serbs from Albanians were notoriously burning and looting Serbian villages forcefully expelling people from their places or what had left from them after the territory was occupied. In some areas under Bulgarian occupational territory when they started to hit hard on Albanians (beside the Serbs) only then some of the local Albanian rulers joined Serbian rebels in their uprisings against Bulgarians on south Kosovo including. Long story short Serbian population from Kosovo on the end of WW1 was totally devastated. 4) Skipping the whole WW2 part and jumping directly into 1945 is huge misguiding in this video. During the time of German, Italian and Bulgarian occupation of ex-Yugoslavia Albanians were 90% pro Nazi supporters even having their own SS forces on the ground together with some local gangs who were responsible for mass execution of Serbs, churches burning and people expelling from Kosovo. Local Serbs expelled from Kosovo after the WW2 were by the law forbidden to return to their destroyed homes forcing them to stay at places where they found themselves when the war ended. Some people wait for over a decade in order to be able to see their friends and family who survived or stayed to live in Kosovo. What was left of Serbian population totally crumbled over that time and Albanians expanded drastically. 5) Also he did not mention that mass industrialization of Belgrade and central Serbia left Tito in need for additional workers. Lot of Serbs were relocated from Kosovo to a jobs in a newly open factories all around the central Serbia and Belgrade especially during 50s and 60s. Meanwhile in the same time especially end of 40s and start of 50s mass migration of Albanians happen from Albania to Kosovo since they were running away from their own dictator Enver Hoxha who become type of leader like North Korea have today. All of them saw Yugoslavia and their cousins in Kosovo as a "free world" comparing to what they had in Albania. 6) During 80s there were so many incidents in which what was left of the Serbian population in the south of Kosovo were constantly harassed, threaten, looted and even killed by the local Albanians who were often waiting for them in the fields and started shooting on them during the harvests or beating them during the nights. Many of those incidents were of course hidden under the carpet until Milošević come to power and promised that it will not happen again anymore (one of the reasons why the local Serbs supported him in the beginning of his coming to power). 7) KLA (or UCK) was formed from a group of local Albanian gangsters that were even by the official CIA reports until 1998 marked as a terrorist group deeply involved in human, drug and weapons trafficking's. When uprising in Albania broke out in middle of 90s that group smuggled tons of weapons from Albania into Kosovo starting arming local mafia warlords who were at very first stopped in their businesses by Serbian police forces who started clashes with them. Even local Albanians who were opposing them or spoke out against KLA as a group of local criminals who not represent Albanians interests were often killed afterwards. Their targets were not only Serbian police but also Serbian civilians and political opponents especially in the villages outside of large towns. 8) 1998 "International Community was outraged by the Serbs" but were not outraged by the KLA terrorist members who were in 1998 magically cleaned down from the terrorist organization lists and instead of that suddenly by Clinton decision become a "freedom fighters group" (sounds familiar?). During whole 1998 US provided KLA with weapons, logistics, maps, coordinates even orders where and which village to attack. US spectators come multiple times on the field during 1998 after the battles like one in winter of 1998 where Serbian police eliminate huge column of KLA terrorist right at the border line. They not even touch bodies and next to them were found US weapons, orders in English, brand new uniforms, snipers, drugs and maps with all details. When this was presented to "independent" spectator he called "both sides on peace solution", I still remember his angry face because US was busted that time in front of all journalists who come there. 9) "Images of children were sent around the world". Which event and where that happened exactly, why he left out important info about what was going on there? There was attack of Serbian police on the main KLA base in Kosovo village and their leader Adem Jasari (now Pristina airport have name this person) who when saw that Serbian troops encircled him run like a coward right into his family house and started shooting from the house at Serbian police. Police was calling him for a whole day to surrender or at least to liberate members of his family from the house which he rejected threatening to his family that he will shot anyone if they try to get out of the house (among those couple of underaged kids). After hours of calling him out situation become desparate and Serbian gunner from a tank hit the house killing Jasari and almost all of his family except of little girl who Serbian troops founded and brought into hospital. 10) "NATO had enough and they started bombing Serbia". First of all US started bombing of Serbia illegally without any UN approval just the same as they did in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places. NATO as defensive alliance had nothing to deal with local conflicts in which they were not directly involved so Clinton not only brake international law by started war he also brake NATO status by doing so. Also not mentioning that during bombings NATO was using illegal DU and cluster munition directly hitting Serbian civilians, infrastructure, refineries and more. 70% of NATO targets were civilians or civilian objects making it clear war crime for which of course no one was ever counted responsible or convinced in Hague. 11) "200.000 Serbs left Kosovo" no they were ethnically cleansed, that is the correct word. Terror of local Serbs expanded when NATO troops enter the region, so called disarmaments was nothing but a fairy tale where KLA mafia leaders continued their businesses expelling local Serbs, Roma but also and Albanians who collaborate with Serbian police. Terrorist attacks on buses, kids who were swimming in rivers, execution of Serbs on the fields, roads, burning the whole villages all of this continues right in front of NATO troops who in that situations watch from the side and did nothing to stop it. March 2004 local Albanians burned more them 100 Churches in a just couple of days some of them under the UNESCO protection from medieval time and NATO did nothing except "evacuating (expelling)" Serbs to more secured areas. 12) ) "Between 1990 and 2000 1.2 Albanians left Kosovo", absolutely false and impossible number, further more almost all Albanians who were living in Kosovo before the conflict in 1998 returned there until 2000 while most of the Serbs who were living there until 2004 were constantly and forcefully expelled year by year with exception from the north. Simple question, if there is so many Albanians expelled how come that Albanians are absolute majority today in Kosovo even expelling most of Roma population which they had before the conflict? To prove this 1991 Kosovo had population of around 1.9 million people. 2011 Kosovo had population of 1.6 million people. 0.3 million migrated to EU smaller amount died in the war where are those 1.2 Albanians expelled he is talking about?

The Yellow House you didnt mention in video ( Sadly ) 4. 2004 Savage behavior, Chaos, Demolition, Mass Destruction by the albanians on 14th century Churches and Monasteries ! 5. "Hashim Tachi'' the man who got acused as war climinal (killed a lot of innocent people inlcuding kids) got himself into politics . Note: In this video we all can clearly see that you are favourising the western europe, much missed facts about Serbia obiviously. But kinda great video anyway. Best regards from K. It’s always fascinating to hear the western side of this story about kosovo and Serbia which never includes any details of destruction of orthodox churches and monasteries in kosovo or war crimes committed against Serbs in the 90s. The fact that KLM basically amounted to a terrorist group funded by nato isn’t mentioned either and the criminal bombing of Serbia by NATO is of course justified because of who makes the video. Maybe you should get a Serbian perspective when you make these videos and try to understand the other side of the conflict instead of creating a narrative that Serbs are the bad guys and these poor little Albanians just want independence they are so peaceful and loving. Every side commits crimes and does horrible things in conflicts and highlighting only one side of the story is typical for this conflict but you can do better Alfie

Not a big deal or anything, but you seem like someone who likes to get things right, so I should correct your pronunciation of the letter J in slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian etc.) - it is not the "zh" as in French, not the "g" sound as in English nor the "h" as in Spanish, but the "y" sound as in yes, yolk, yeast, yankee.. Hope you found this helpful, love your channel, keep up the good work!
