This calibre of player has always fascinated me, even across multiple sports or even non-sports, like professional wrestling (Jeff Jarrett is the ultimate "not good enough for the main event but way too good to be below the main event" talent of all time). Seems in the English game there should be room for promotion specialists as players; of course it's highly unlikely a professional athlete will not back themselves to go on to the PL, but players who routinely don't end up doing well at the top end of the game could benefit by marketing themselves as a gun for hire to push a team into PL glory before moving on to the next Championship title contender. I reckon a common theme for a lot of these players is they would be considered poacher style strikers, something which you don’t really see in the prem anymore, some of them probably could do better in top divisions in other countries where the style is different

I remember the minor league Phoenix Firebirds baseball team when I moved from Fort Wayne, IN, to Phoenix in 1992. (The Firebirds moved to, I believe, Fresno, before the 1998 season.)

These players need to leave England imo. They would likely be goal machines in e.g. serie a or the bundesliga. Its just styles of play. Dwight gayle is a perfect example. Reckon he'd be good at a team like napoli imo.

Fair play for not going for Mitrovic, like the majority of people who don't seem to realise he barely played last season and that he actually hit double figures for Fulham in a poorly-assembled and struggling squad when they first returned to the top flight. He's definitely good enough for the Prem.

@Andrew-eo2cw2 жыл бұрын
Each club will usually release 3 strips each year. 1) home shirt, which will most likely stick to the club's 'original' colour and pattern. E.g Red and white stripes for Sunderland and black and white stripes for Newcastle. 2) away kit. This will be a different colour to the home shirt. 3) 3rd kit. Incase there is a colour clash in a match... (And to make more money from shirt sales) Some clubs will have a similar home colour. E.g West ham, Aston villa & Burnley. Or, Sunderland, Southampton and Sheffield United. When the play eachother, the away or 3rd kit will be used.

A lot of it has to do with play style and quality of players, some people play better and thrive with bad teammates because they have to play harder other play better with quite exceptional teammates who expect a lot from them. The way the team plays matters too. Formation and individual discipline a lot of factors go into how well someone plays with a team. Like ones play style and yes the argument can be made that a good player adapts but we can take a look at man united this season and see the perfect example of good players not playing good together for one reason or another.

Would have been interesting to see if some of these strikers had been given a real run in the PL, would things still be the same? Similarly, if they'd been picked up by an established mid-table team rather than (like Pukki) be stuck with a team that were never going to give them the support they need to be their best.

Is it the fact that they aren’t cut out for the EPL or is it that they went from a team that dominated championship games in possession and attack to a bottom feeding team that struggles to flourish due to the opposition being a lot better ?

Peter Whittingham (RIP), was a solid midfielder for Villa in the Premier League during the start of his career. Certainly had his best years in the Championship, but think you were right to not include him.
@GorgeDawes2 жыл бұрын
I remember Peter Wittingham having a particularly good season at Villa early in his career where despite being nominally a wide player at the time, he was moved into centre-mid so that he could have more influence on the game. I was a bit baffled when we sold him, this was a period where Villa made a bit of a habit of selling promising British players who were obviously going to do well elsewhere (see also Gary Cahill and Steven “most capped British player of all time” Davis).

I kind of always disagree with a bunch of these "too good for the Champ/not good enough for the PL"... I mean come on in the Championship they play for dominant teams that create chances and then collectively and understandably they come up against better opposition and get less of the ball, less corners, less penalties, less free kicks, less chances. They become the team they enjoyed smashing by 4,5,6 or as many as 7 goals the previous season. Mitrovic has just torn up the Championship but how many chances has he had per game? Vs. how many chances he'll get next season in the Prem; there will be a huge difference. His international record as of right now is very respectable with 44 goals in 71 games... Clearly he has the ability to be a top PL striker but will he get the chances? Ivan Toney has just had an impressive (proper) debut season in the Prem 12 goals scored. If he stays at Brentford they could have a tricky second season, maybe only scores 10 goals and becomes added to this list. I think he'd be a great fit for Arsenal where he could net 15-20 goals with the extra chances he'd likely get.
