I am a massive fan of Padraig’s and he is elite and helped me with my game but it does make me smile when anyone says “Amateurs do this wrong all the time” or “I see a lot of amateurs making this mistake” it’s like all these players were never at our level haha. It’s not a dig at him or any of them but it’s like we all forget we were shite once. On a less grumpy old twat vibe, this series has been amazing! Thanks PH

6:57 “The hands are fighting”. I wish you would elaborate on this more. I heard you say before , “like you are wringing the water out of towel”. However, right before it you said the hands/wrists moved in the same direction.

Note where Padraig’s hands are in front of body and angle of his club shaft. Most recreational golfers set up at address with much more forward shaft lean which results in de-lofting the face which is great for adding distance via roll but not the best swing strategy for hitting high lofted soft landing approach shots. Starting with the hands further back at address means they will bottom out and start the lag releasing wrist action further back behind the ball which is required to hit higher lofted shots. In a swing without side bend the downswing pulls the right arm out straight sooner putting the hands further ahead and causing the lag to start to release earlier, sooner than required for optimal striking force. The more the spine curves to the right in the downswing more the hands can swing forward before the club momentum forces the lag out of the wrists. Just hold the hands still and force different amounts of side bend to see the cause and effect. The more the spine curves right the more it forces a lateral shift of left hip forwards and up moving the hands forward and up in their swing arc but not in a way that causes the radial deviation lag to be pulled out of the wrists.

Nothing like hitting a nice solid 5 iron! It’s my weakest iron but when I catch it flush it just flys and you barely even feel the ball on the club face.

Side Bend is the Holy Grail secret of the golf swing I discovered by reverse engineering how the pros looked at impact and experienced the same shallowing of the club path coming down especially if side bending right ) is the first move made at the top of the downswing to jerk the club back in the opposite direction instead of keeping spine straight and just dropping elbow. The movement of the lead wrist from flexion to straight you illustrate gives the wrist the mechanical leverage to sustain the radial deviation (thumb up towards radius bone in forearm) deeper into the swing arc of the hands. Changing the orientation of the front wrist from maxed out flexion to straight causes a very rapid change - like cracking a whip- of both hands thumb’s down to full ulnar deviation. Just hold the club in the hands still in front where that happen and watch how much the shaft rotates and face angle closes. It was the same wrist action Hogan used. There is a dwell time and dwell angle between the time the face strikes the back of the ball and it compresses and rebound off pros take into account in their address with club face slightly open and reflexively aiming the open face / inside of center of the ball > +. But 8 out of 10 people I see on the range thing the goal is to have face square at impact No the goal is to have the face square at the point the ball flies off the face which varies with swing speed and type of ball. What adding side bend does is create a much more inside path on the way down which requires opening the face and aiming a bit more inside at impact because the tighter path delivers more club speed speed and compression to the ball than a swing without side bend. I introduce others I see frustrated from hitting fat and slicing and not having a clue way to the side bend concept often and see the same thing happen. They start hitting hooks. But they don’t understand why any more than they understood why they hit fat and sliced or how to fix it. Open the face more at address and aim the face a bit more inside on the ball. It is very counter-intuitive until you remember the ball needs time to compress and release and while that is happening the face is closing. Whenever more velocity at impact is added force multiplies exponentially F= 1/2 (Mass of Club Head x Velocity^2). The radial - to - ulnar deviation snap down move creates a burst of acceleration and striking force which compresses the ball more and causes it to release off the face later in the swing arc when the face has turned left. The solution? Open the face a bit more at address behind the ball. The aim point for the more open face needs to be moved a bit inside more so newly adjusted face doesn’t swipe across the back of ball. Like I say it is very counter intuitive but if you add the side bend move as Paddy is showing here and start to hook shots don’t try to cure it with just the face angle adjustment. Just imagine a tack is glued to the sweet spot of the face and you want to put the tack in the ball not dead center to the target + on back of ball but inside of center > + the tip of the tack touches first. That way the ball will come off the face with a straight backspin axis not a hook / or slice \ inducing tilted backspin axis. It is also critical to keep the side bend all the way into the post-impact extension by continuing to look at where the ball was at impact not moving reflexively moving eyes and head to see where the ball is going. Play ‘faith based golf’ Keep the head don’t and have faith in your swing bio-mechanics.

Too easy. Just throw all your angles early in the downswing. Unfortunately I can do it every single shot.
