Hi Randy! We were just talking about that, and I actually think that nosema is more of an issue where the bees are unable to make cleansing flights during winter. BUT, based on Randy O's evaluation of those pollen patties, I'd seriously consider those no matter where I keep bees :) Thanks for taking time to watch and comment! Hello to your fabulous wife!
@628DirtRooster2 жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn Elizabeth says hi with a big smile on her face. We do see nosema ever couple of years. It'll only be in a few hives and they generally clear up pretty fast on their own. I used to strip all the honey frames out of the hive and start them on clean foundations and a sugar water feeder. I'd leave any brood frames in. That straightened them out real fast. Eventually I had some that I didn't have time to deal with and after observing them I realized they would recover almost as quickly on their own. I'm not sure how detrimental a condition it is farther north but I don't think I've ever lost a hive to it.

I just went to an advanced beekeeping class where Kent Williams spoke - I asked him how to feed bees during a southern dearth without additives since the additives start robbing. (I use Hive Alive - but during the heat of the summer dearth to use it robbing is a problem, to not use it the syrup molds within 24 hours or less.) He suggested to use a winter patty to feed the bees in the hive during the dearth. I really want Hive Alive to be offered to my bees at every opportunity - so in watching this I am wondering if the Hive Alive fondant packs may be an option for mid summer dearth feeding deep in the hive. Maybe the robbing would be less of an issue as the syrup gets spilled and the fondant wouldn't be spilled outside the hive? What do you think? I am in Middle TN - zone 7A.
@FrederickDunn2 жыл бұрын
I think I wouldn't want to use hive alive fondant in summer. I'm also surprised that using a hive top feeder system would attract robbers? I can see that as a problem with entrance style feeders that I do not recommend. Things may be different in the southern regions. One thing to think about is that you don't want any of the essential oil based syrups getting into your harvestable honey supers. Unless it's a recent swarm, or new split, I don't feed them any in-hive syrup. I'd safe the fondant for the late season after honey supers have been removed and cold weather is arriving. You could just put sugar syrup on without essential oils and avoid that attraction to robbing bees. Also the bees have demonstrated that they can do with a very small entrance. I also don't use any upper entrances and no upper venting, is there a chance that you have those features which could contribute to the scent getting out into the air?
@Gs_Bees Жыл бұрын

Fred, very good video presentation! After watching I just wanted to get the latest update on your best practices. Are you still spraying a mixture of Honey B Healthy and 2 to 1 liquid sugar to spray the bees when inspecting instead of smoking them, or have you now to switched over to Hive Alive? Thanks! 👍
@FrederickDunn2 жыл бұрын
I've never sprayed 2:1 sugar syrup on my bees :) BUT, I do use 1 tsp of Honey-B-Healthy to one quart of 1:1 Sugar syrup when inspecting on those hot days. The bees calm right down and the 1:1 doesn't bog them down and they respond with their tongues out as soon as they smell it. :) I also so spray swarms with it to give them weight unless I'm using the Colorado Bee Vac.
@onefastfreddy2 жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn No, that's my mistake. I originally was thinking one to one, but I thought it might be too thick, especially since I'm used to making hummingbird solution with four parts water to one part sugar, so I thought maybe it was 2 parts water to 1 part sugar. Anyway, Thanks for clarifying! It's probably getting time to compile the "Frederick Dunn's - The Way to Bee Guide"! Subtitled: "This is What has Worked Well for Me where I Live!" @MinnesotaBeekeeper2 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering how much of the nosema is dealt with by the thyme itself? Something Dara skimmed past. A hard number comparison between Thymol and hivealive would be helpful. If I recall Ian Steppler seems to have eliminated Nosema with a proprietary ground corn pollen supplement (including Vits & minerals). He's rather hush hush about his sub mix. Both could to boil down to gut health. And a mite drop? He mentioned, guessing it might have been attributed to the thymol. Skeptical, expensive. All things considered I think we all could be more mindful of inspecting bee drop for "k-winged bees", and so on that would could be tracheal mites or nosema. Final question, has anyone ever seen studies on feeding a mix of propolis in sugar syrup?
@thehiveandthehoneybee95472 жыл бұрын
he put a link to study in the description i thik the canada guy is just guessing so he isnt talking but I cant affort any of it.
@FrederickDunn2 жыл бұрын
Thymal is a treatment, Hive Alive is a dietary supplement and not listed as a treatment. The predominent ingredient is the seaweed extracts. Fucaceae would be the ingredient for promoting the healthy gut bacteria that he discussed, he seemed to comment that the healthy gut activity served to push out or reduce the nosema spores. The Thyme must have some negative impact on the nosema spores unless it's just part of the preservative trait? You're right, it would have been great to have had more detail on that. If Ian has "eliminated" nosema, then he's onto something! It would be the first to do more than just reduce the spore count. I hope he's brought some bio-chemists onboard to help with that project. I hope he publishes and we can all benefit from the work. I've done lots of trachael mite inspections and have not found them for many years. That may be something that is in profound decline, and that's great news considering at one time they wiped huge numbers of managed colonies. You're right, we need to pay careful attention to K-Wing and Crawling Bees in front of he hives. Propolis is so highly variable that it's hard to pin it down for predictable composition as a feed. No one has done that "yet". Marla Spivak would be the one to ask as she has her scientific hands on all things propolis.

EFB is not caused by a sporogenous microorganism, sorry. Paenibacillus alvei is just one from some secondary invaders in the EFB sindrom. And it is well known.

EFB is caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Melissocccus plutonius. Hive Alive is targeted towards nosema. EFB secondary invaders: Achromobacter euridice commonly occurs in healthy larvae and is much more frequent in larvae infected with M. plutonius in the northern hemisphere, but has not been reported from Australia (Djordjevic et al., 1998). A. euridice is frequently isolated in mixed culture with M. plutonius and EFB symptoms in larvae are more easily induced with inoculate containing both of these organisms than with M. plutonius alone (Bailey, 1956). The source of A. euridice seems to be the alimentary canal of adult For those wanting more information: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022201109001876

@@FrederickDunn Thanks for your time. After 25 years of lab and fieldwork as a veterinarian and researcher, I have some different observations concerning EFB. As you see all data are very old and geographical zone and ecology can be different concerning general acceptance. The marker for secondary infections EFB here in the BiH Bosnia and Herzegovina, for us in the clinically sick brood (late phase) and honey samples is Paenibacillus alvei. And EFB is a very complicated disease. What had a bad smell here in our hives is not AFB! EFB syndrome smells bad.
