Hi Jason, a small warning: I lost one of my hives because water had condensated on the plastic bag (fondant) and dripped on the bees just below. (11:41) I usually put a small piece of jute under it, but here I forgot. So, be careful. All the best, cheers, Diego

Hay Jason, I always enjoy your video's. As a first year bee keeper I take your advice alot. Thanks. Now I have a couple questions if you please. #1. I've used Oxalic acid on my bees, followed the directions and still have alot of mites. It is now mid. Sept. her in the middle of Virginia and I'm starting to use the Apiguard. do you think I can use both the "Oxalic and Apiguard at the same time ? What's your opinion?. #2. Do you prefer 5 frame nuc's compared to 8 and 10 frame hives ? Thanks. Woodie
@JCsBees Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Im glad the videos are helpful. How many gram of acid did you use per treatment? Also with OA you have to treat every 5 to 7 days for several weeks. This is because OA does NOT kill mites under capped cells. I'd let the Apiguard do it's job then follow it with a few OA treatments. I've treated with OA with temps down in the 40's and had no issues. Yes, I sure do prefer 5 framers over anything, they don't get super strong and turn mean, they are easy to work since each box only has 5 frames and they bring me $190 each when I sell them. Win, Win if you ask me! Hope this was helpful buddy!

12’ last night here…what is the thought process of leaving the plastic on the fondant-and protein Pattie’s….
@davidlopata75322 жыл бұрын
I was gonna ask the same thing!
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
Dara Scott speaks about the plastic in Fredericks video. The fondant patty's will dry out if the plastic is removed. By cutting the door on the bottom it doesn't dry out before the bees consume it. As for the pollen patty's, I've always let the bees remove the wax paper and they have no problems doing it. It's was February cold last night. You know it's cold when the cows are standing in the sun when you arrive to feed them. lol

Always appreciate new and improved feeds. Thanks for showing your evaluation Jason. The question that comes up in my mind is that these patties are $48.95 for a 10 lb. box plus $15 shipping. Thanks for your quick response JC . I have guardian entrance guard on a hive in a remote location, you had said you were going to do a follow up on your tests and wanted to compare to my hive which I have found excellent, this hive is on a concrete pad and red ants clean up the area. I Have seen your video on nematodes. I am in OZ not sure if that strain are endemic also live in the sub tropics. Soil compacts like rock in the dry and mud in the wet.

Hi Jason. You haven't changed the name yet like you said you would do. Here we have similar paddies but with another name but not so thin or with holes. Here they are 4 ibs each but like I said before. I never feed paddies inside the hives. I'm afraid of moisture or a hive that's not so strong have a bigger risk to get robbed by stronger colonies. That's why I have them available for the whole apiary where they are placed.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dag, Fair enough! I did get it changed in the video description but haven't on my video credits. I'm sorry. I knew when you told me, I better not forget or you'd be on me. lol I understand your concerns about feeding inside the hive but by not doing it your setting your bees behind slightly. When spring comes it's usually rainy (at least here) and on rainy days I still want my bees to be productive at raising brood. Keep in mind rainy days in the spring are warm and not cold. You can take precautions by only feeding small amounts at a time inside the colony. You should try it with one hive, I bet it out grows the others.
@swohiobees2 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit nervous about the beetles too with these patties. I plan to look in on them this week for a check-up. At least one of them are probably due for a new Hive-live Fondant too. Q - Will they continue to eat the patty after there is a lot of natural pollen available or should I toss the remainders at that time? Always look forward to your updates Jason.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, I like to leave the patty's on for awhile after natural pollen is available. I leave for all the rainy days we have to start off spring. Usually by mid April there is enough pollen in the hive they will ignore the patty so then it could be removed (tossed) or maybe moved to a weaker colony.

My bee club does a silent auction in December to raise money. I took a 100ml bottle of hive alive ($30 value) in as one of the items for auction. Not 1 person bid on it. Couldn't even get a $5 bid. Do you have experience with nematodes? Last summer (south east Tennessee) I had a lot of hive beetles. I kept bobwhites and chickens, both of which would daily dust bath under my hives. I applied nematodes during a wet spell in the fall. I have not noticed a hive beetle this spring. Crossing my fingers and hoping.

Are there failsafe procedures to avoid cross contamination of European or American foulbrood spores in the pollen? Or sacbrood spores ? Reason I ask is I used Mann Lakes premade pollen patties with real pollen . I nine hives that year I used the patties. Five from European foulbrood and four from sacbrood. So I get nervous about using real pollen from commercial producers unless they do a thorough testing of the product.
