That Skinny Fatty scene is a case study on theatrical blocking. So good. Interesting that 1977 (Broken Oath and Shaolon Plot) is when the movements ("shapes") become more defined with Sammo. Poses are stickier, under cranking the camera helps. The old school Chinese fluidity lacked the clear poses and instead had less aggressive anticipation and fluid recoveries. But here Sammo is becoming more shapely, clearly inspired by working with Koreans like Cassanova Wong, Kwan Young Moon, and Wang In Sik. Korean action at the time was maybe TOO shape-y and lacking the Chinese flow, and Korea never really caught onto this. But Sammo was as southern Chinese as it got and he took whatever worked and put it to use, so the confluence of Korean and Chinese movement is what comes to define Sammo's style. Not only is he using more Hapkido and Taekwondo in the late 70s, but fighting becomes more impact-based, like Sammo was watching Koreans spar on set. You didn't get that kind of sparring in traditional Chinese arts. Bruce did the same. Shaw Bros. always seemed more traditionalist. The Venoms had Sun Chien doing Korean kicks but they always felt more flowy and Chinese. Lau Ka Leung perfected the pure Chinese movement flow but he was a unicorn. His brother meanwhile started a production company with Sammo and moved more Korean-like. You gotta wonder what those politics looked like... But the successful Hong Kong choreographers went the way of Sammo by mixing Korean elements. Some kept to wires and could stay traditional, but Sammo's style was better integrated into the contemporary fight economy. You'd never see a Lau Ka Leung version of Wheels On Meals.

I'm gonna have to find more Korean martial arts films from the 70s' then. Melee combat in Korean movies nowadays range from the Bourne style to more HK-based or specifically Donnie Yen-based like Revenger. But I have no idea what they must've been like in the post-Bruce Lee decade...
