It's getting more and more expensive to be an H&K Snob. I paid about $1,720 (before tax) for my SL8, about 2 months ago. I love it though - an AR-15 caliber rifle for those of us who don't like the AR-15 design. The only downside is the difficulty in loading the single-stack magazine, but I manged to fabricate my own loader. With all of the extras that come with this rifle (the nice case, the multi-tool), It's surprising to me that they didn't just throw a cheap, plastic mag loader in the box as well. I considered the Springfield Edge ATC as well, which was like $600 less expensive, but I think I made the right choice. I always have buyer's remorse whenever I let price influence my gun-buying decision.

You get the cold hammer forged bull barrel, crowned. Yes ugly stock but has cheek piece. Enhance trigger. So yea in true German fashion they don’t half azz anything. Even when they had to modify their master piece to suit the unconstitutional laws. They only make things better. Mishaco channel state this is 1.5 Mia vs g36 I moa. The g36 was a fighting rifle and not a tack driver. This is my chance to get short stroke piston gun without having to pay 4K for a scar or hk416, hell even an Aug cost closer to 2400 bucks. This gun will be collectible and my local dealer has it for $1600 about same price as a mid range AR but you get the clean action from Piston rifle and soft recoil and improved barrel

you must be American. Us Canadians get to use double stack mags :D. the magwell conversions work well too if you want to switch to stanag mags.

Guns solid I had the original grey version 17 years ago it’s not cheap or plastic it’s a light sniper rifle It’s a good investment right now the markets real soft and they’re cheap eventually they won’t be available anymore and then they’ll be three to $4000 US

Well maybe. When the original grey rifles were gone they went to around 2k. Now they're back in black (For the time being) and I bought one this week for 1399 at a shop. HK's fickleness is what will drive the value. Here today, gone tomorrow, etc.

I have one of the "new" SL8-6s(I live in the US). One of the locking lugs is shaved and the magwell is dimpled so can only use single-stack 10 round mags. The mods I've done so far to mine is replace the short rail with the long one with iron sights and swapped the G36 handguard with a black original style SL8 handguard because it has a tighter fit and less wiggle. I would like to convert it to G36 mags but I would have to replace the bolt and magwell which are easy swap in parts but I would also have to dremel the receiver just under the ejection port since that part is also dimpled.

Technically the 4 and 5 were never out of production it was only the 6. In typical HK fashion the SL8 has been backordered for years so we'll see when they actually show up :) I picked mine up used, if you wait long enough they always pop up. Un modified about $2500 ish, modified $3200 ish

Thanks for the great vid. These are awesome rifles. In fact, I just bought one! I'm doing some research on a scope and rings for it. I'm a little concerned about HOW TALL the scope rail is. Not sure if I'm going to need to use low rings or if I can go with a cantilever QD mount. What are you using (and are you happy with how they are working for you)? Any feedback is appreciated!

Depends on what you're mounting, with the additional comb riser pieces and a red dot or AR scope mounted low (like 1/3 co witness). I think you MIGHT. A normal cantilever mount good luck haha. I used an AR scope with a low mount and it was really close. I have a high cheekbone though

I just converted my sl8-6 to a g36. An incredible rifle!

I guess being patient is paying off. PSA is now selling them at $1000 before tax. Picked one up. Can't justify it when they are going at $1800. Too many draw backs. Although at $1000 even just for the novelty of it, it is hard to pass up. May do a DMR build later down the road if tommy built is offering the PSG8 kit again.

GreetingS. Nice informative review on this rifle. Thank you. QUESTION: Was looking at the Tommy Built SL8 replacement lower with Geissele trigger/the AR style bolt on grip and the Magpul PRS2 G3 adjustable sniper style stock. Not mechanically illiterate by any means but I don't have any experience assembling/disassembling Weapons (the SL8 is my first rifle). Is the lower/stock removal and reassembly really doable for the average Joe? It seems very straight forward and it would be nice not to have to send my rifle in to have this done. Perhaps a link to a how to video??? Your thoughts on this are very welcome. Thanks again.

unless you are using a higher end AR, I would say of the semi autos this is the gold standard for accuracy.

I bought one the other day and really I find myself liking it. The thumbhole isn't quite shaped right, btu not too crazy bad. The bore is FAR below the optic. In your video it looks like you need an extra cheek riser?

Depends on application. Target I would do a 4-16 or similar. Tactical I'd go red dot, add a magnifier if going longer range. A little bit of both I'd go LVPO at least 1-8

Can you use the same Magwell from your factory SL8-5 with the G36 mags? Or do you also need the standard G36 Magwell to use the mags?

So from what I can see H&k essentially took an awesome G36 battle rifle and turned it into in my opinion a useless bench gun of which personally the SL8 looks nice, but just is not one of them style modern sporting rifles, that I would like to use in case of that shtf or self defense situations. so in turn it would just sit in the safe until I would find a use for it kinda like a bolt action that I do not have much use for accept during hunting season and even now I am moving toward the AR-10 platform with it plethora of calibers to be swapped out with just the push of 2 pins

I'd agree with you on this. I've shot a few coyotes with the SL8 but its very front heavy and not the greatest. Canada's stupid gun laws prevent us from using AR platforms for hunting though :(

Why would you want an AR if you can have an a HK? I don't think there's a question about it. You can go buy an AR in pieces and have just an AR in the end. You can't buy the parts without it being a true HK. I applaud you if you can

Why not have a Mauser action in 308 built for you? Take a Douglas barrel and mate to the action? It's a bolt action and you can shoot about 300 yards with it.

Would depend on Application. Bench/target gun SL8 all the way. Tactical/3 gun Carmel. SL8 is great but its pretty barrel heavy

Please don't mess with these rifles! Use only HK parts if you eventually are going to sell it. It doesn't matter what parts you buy for an AR it's still going to a piece of crap! Shoot a real rifel like an HK!

you can purchase a magwell adapter from several companies. the most popular one is Spuhr. Very easy to change it out. I suspect you could 3D print one as well.

@@pewpewreview5376 Your rifle has a wide receiver. Probably a Canuk market rifle? In the States we get the single stack receivers and they're not easy to modify to anything.

They take single stack clips. I'd advise you not to mess with your HK. Just shoot it and have some fun. Don't mess with that gun. If you want to mess with something then get an AR

Just leave an HK an HK! If you want an AR then order it piece by piece. You cant do thay with an HK. Florida sells the clips if are serious about it? I bought 5 30 round clips for my HK there with no problem
