I had the opportunity to play this (and other arrangements including a medley from Wicked) at a clinic with Michael Sweeney himself as a guest conductor, and we kinda had no clue where we were anywhere after the introduction in this piece lmao

Simplifying technical passages for younger ensembles is one thing, but changing keys impedes the growth of young groups like this. Especially given Horkstow is originally in Db, which is not an exceptionally difficult key to play in.

www.bandworld.org/pdfs/GradingChart.pdf It's pretty standard for low grade level pieces to not have awkward keys (which Db is for grade 2) especially when it's not necessary. The reason the original composition is in Db is because Grainger probably thought the range was both practical for professional level players and instruments resonated well (trumpets and woodwinds were bright and resonant while bass trombone and other bass voices weren't too low to avoid muddiness). This is not the case for a beginner band- grade 2 would struggle in the trumpets at the end in particular. Plus, beginner strings hate flats, let alone professionals, and the purpose of this type of composition is to be as accessible as possible. As for the second piece, you have to be able to build technical ability on simple keys before playing in more difficult ones.

lol youtube Allowing younger ensembles to play complex pieces in more comfortable keys exposes them to challenging music that is more suitable to their level. As they grow, they can play these same pieces that haven’t been simplified or transposed. As for Db, that is a more challenging key for less experienced groups.

Also, the piece being in Db makes it a lot more unique and different from other pieces, so that was taken away too

I implore you to listen to the original, it's so much better! These were transposed into some really simplified keys.

what a travesty and slap in the face to Grainger. Lincolnshire Posy is so unique in sound and orchestration that even trying to adapt it for a flex ensemble is a sin. Just another money-grab.......

soooo you think younger students shouldn't get the privilege to play his music at a lower level? As someone who played these exact arrangements in 8th grade, they were what introduced me to the beautiful world of Grainger's music and the proper versions of these pieces. I think the sacrifice is more than worth it to introduce younger generations by arranging it to be easier

Dude, I get what you are saying, but chill out. Give younger kids the chance to play this stuff...give directors with incomplete ensembles or PANDEMIC LIKE SITUATIONS a chance to play something that's not pop music. Chill out.
