I shoot in HLG3 on my a7SIII especially as a wildlife shooter. When something happens you don't want the hassle of 1.5+ exposure and HLG3 has great shadow recoverability that could surpass SLog3. You can easily under expose and get great results if you're aiming for outdoor shooting and extending dynamic range. Actually HLG3/HLG is comparable to SLog2 out of the gate in terms of dynamic range according to Gerald Undone test but try raising shadow on SLog3 and you'll be shocked with all the noise. If there is an advantage for SLog3 it's pretty minor and you can either supplement with extra light or underexpose a bit.

@@BryceKoebel Also the color gamut is wide enough with Rec.2020. Most TV's and monitors haven't even cracked 80% coverage since years now. Also you get the benefit of having HDR-ready content when you wanna remaster it. SLog3 can make great HDR indeed but when you think you don't have full control HLG3 is wide enough in terms of dynamic range and wide enough in terms of color gamut. Warm regards!

How is the highlight recovery compared to SLOG3?

@@BryceKoebel I believe it's the other way around. SLog3 is great for retaining highlights, but not so good for shadows. To get closer to SLog3 I would suggest underexposing a bit in high contrast scene as HLG3 seems to handle exposure pretty good. I should do a comprehensive test to give 100% answer later. But I tried exposing 2+ down to 2- on person's face then made both looking 95% identical. Did that in HDR as well while testing. I would as well suggest that a polarizer seems to enhance dynamic range in the highlights do to its nature of regecting excessive light when moved correctly. So a VND could gave way satsifying results and give it a "filmic" look before even adding a LUT. I use PolarPro Basecamp mattebox most of the time outside. I use a polarizer as well when interviewing someone with reflective skin.

Assuming you dial into proper Color Management in post, taking advantage of a wide timeline Color space such as HDR davinci wide gamut intermediate, you can use most of your grading tools from SDR workflows to deliver great HDR videos. But Rec709 won’t work well in such environment - unfortunately, the downside.

This is a correction LUT + Colour. So a bit of a combination. But if you just want the colour you can set the composite mode to “colour” and it should only bring the colour correction 😊

It wouldn’t work properly because of how the LUT changes the image. You’d be better off doing adjustments manually
