They originated in China. According to Hmong & Chinese legend, the Hmong originally populated the Central Plains of China prior to Han Chinese invasion from the west, causing them to flee south. Supposedly, there was a war known as the "Battle of Zhuolu" in Hebei, where Yandi and Huangdi (the leaders of the Han Chinese) defeated Chiyou (the leader of the Hmong people). As time went by, the Han Chinese further expanded their territory, causing the Hmong to flee further southwards into Laos and Vietnam, although some still stayed behind in China.
