Look at how young Charles Bronson is back then. Sitting calmly, listening and interacting with the audience. The media and the government since that time have made him out to be a monster. Can't believe this is 1989 and here we are in 2023, Bronson is still in prison! FOR WHAT? FFS! Not a murderer, not a terrorist, not a rapist, not a bank robber, or underworld Godfather. The screws antagonized him, and that made him lash out. The system was, and still is run by passive aggressive little men who take their authority way too far, and they should be the ones under examination not the inmates.

Oh come on, he's kept himself inside by attacking people and kidnapping people. You shouldn't idolise him, he's a horrible person who has destroyed the lives of innocent people. I think he's afraid to leave, he's a deeply frightened and insecure man who can't handle independent life, the lunatic persona is a defence mechanism to keep people away. He can't even handle being in the general population with other prisoners so keeps himself in segregation.

this is brilliant, its mind boggling how the "British inmate" has changed in the last 30 yrs, they are so erratic, young and undisciplined today compared to this 1989 film, understanding that they obviously been bad to be inside, but nonetheless its astonishing how much the prison system has gone down hill especially under the tory government since 2010. i think the prison/justice system is on its last legs, similar to the NHS and so many services, kiss goodbye to any decent mental health program, i was born in Iraq but lived in London since i was 5, I'm 38 now and i would give my life for this country, its my home, but it hurts to see how life has changed for the worse, thanks for this upload, its sobering and very humbling

I don’t think it’s the British inmate that has changed it’s the regime changes and the new psychoactive drugs inmates are smoking that have changed the system, back in these days the inmates used to smoke a bit of solid and everything was sweet, there was a hierachy in the system where you had the old school London villains the “pavement artists” at the top now it’s whoever has the most spice or brown is the man bring religion into the mix now with how the Muslims have got hold f the high security estate it’s a completely different prison experience.

Thanks for uploading this, my Dad was residing at Long Lartin around this time. It’s good to get an insight on how things were around that time for him. Dad passed away 2 years ago at Gartree 16 years into a 21 rec. I miss him terribly. Thanks for the upload.

@@waynestead1943 murder… he’d spent a total of 40 years in prison. Received an 18 year sentence in the mid 80’s for an armed robbery, and conspiracy. He died aged 61 of bowel cancer. But was neglected by the system, and never received the proper cancer treatment that would be available to us lucky folks on this side of the fence. We received a lovely telephone message from Charles Bronson, and also a wreath. Which was very moving.

This has come full circle. Although given the chance to work, giving too much, too quickly, has had the opposite effect on the rest of the system. The current staff “revolving door” of new staff leaving because they can’t handle the job, and the constant replacement of those staff, means that the system is no longer able to settle into a routine for those that need and want help. 💂‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Paul Sykes was the most feared prisoner and that included when he was inside with Bronson. I read a book about Sykes, with one ex officer I think it was, saying that he heard that Bronson was bullying someone he knew and told Bronson to turn around, sit down and look at the wall. Bronson didn’t even say anything and did what he was told. Later Bronson went on to speak about Sykes and said he was one of the hardest men he ever met.

The first day of imprisonment (which is the punishment) rehabilitation should start through education and life goals are to be encouraged ,staffing levels and ratios should be improved , not pay so called security company's ,whom have proven to be useless in rehabilitation.

Outside prison, if I told my boss to "f off!" I'd be sacked and be punished, with having my ability to buy food or pay rent taken away from me. I'd have to either wait 4 weeks to receive benefits, or get to work finding another job. I'd rather be locked up for 7 days and then given my job back.

I can tell you prison is not like this anymore, When i was in Prison in the early 90's in Australia things ran pretty smoothly you had a job, could work in Prison pit if Prison depending on the crime. Classification of A & B was Maximum security was C was minimum like Farms still Prison but less security. Now its like a full on jungle, No smoking, Scanning devices, Murders, fights, just zero respect these days. Privatisation didn't help.all inmates in this film soeak very well. Seem like time was slow back then not like its faced paced hectic world of today. Charlie amazes me he hasn't lost his marbles. British Government should be ashamed they have deprived his freedom for years. The rotten Tory Government.

The prisoner who they keep referring to is John ‘Ginger’ Bowden. Brutally murdered and dismembered someone. I heard about ten years ago he was in an open prison near where I live in North East Scotland. 👍

Never seen this before, very interesting, basically the foundations of prison reform. I bet when Charlie was filming this he wouldn’t of thought he’d still be locked up ⬆️ n 2022, hopefully his time is nearly up by the sound of things.

I think unless you have done 3 years + behind the door it’s hard to get your head around doing jail, never been cat A but the Living alone without privacy, love etc

I wish I didn't know about prisons but I do and the only way to stop the revolving door is with education and employers being willing to employ ex offenders. Many years ago 2 types of men found it very hard to get jobs because they lacked education and were institutionalised, prisoners and those leaving the army and they were both treated the same.
