My Grandad died on the Hood and according to Ted Briggs he was the last person that he spoke to before the ship was blown apart. I had the privilege of going to Ted’s funeral in Portsmouth.

So, your Grandad was Mr. Warrand, the man who made that gesture to Ted, which he would describe every time as impressively calm, allowing Mr. Briggs first to the evacuation doors???

To the descendants and relatives of all those who were aboard HOOD and PRINCE OF WALES on that fateful day in May 1941, know that their memory and legacies live on with honour, until the end of time. Mighy then, Mighty now, Mighty forever! "Ventis Secundis" to the crew of HMS Tamar!

Part of the reason she was sunk was because she was given that nickname. She never was mighty and certainly not on that day. It was doomed before it even started. Believing she was ' ' mighty ' ' and capable of engaging a superior ship was foolish. The other ships of her class were cancelled after they discovered major errors in her construction. And it only got worse. She never got the refits she needed and she spend most of her time showing-off to the world.

If you'd like an individual example of the esteem with which HMS Hood was held by other nations, look no further than the account of Baron Burkhard von Mullenheim-Rechberg, the senior ranking survivor of Bismarck, and her 4th gunnery officer, here's an excerpt of his account of the start of the battle of Denmark Strait. "The British ships were turning slightly to port, the lead ship showing an extremely long forecastle and two heavy twin turrets. On the telephone I heard Albrecht shout, "The HOOD...... it's the HOOD!" (his capitalisation), It was an unforgettable moment. There she was, the famous warship, once the largest in the world, that had been the "terror" of so many of our war games." Later he made these remarks following Hood's demise.... "At first the Hood was nowhere to be seen: in her place was a colossal pillar of black smoke reaching into the sky. Gradually at the foot of the pillar, I made out the bow of the battle cruiser projecting upwards at an angle, a sure sign that she had broken in two. Then I saw something I could hardly believe: A flash of orange coming from her forward guns! Although her fighting days had ended, the Hood was firing a last salvo. I felt a great respect for those men over there" Sounds as if the Kriegsmarine and her gunnery experts were more impressed by HMS Hood than you appear to be.

Believe what you like, but her nickname was part of the reason she was sunk.

@JMUL15 I am relaying the facts as they happened. Not relaying my butthurt emotions. And, If the BISMARCK's salvo (of which there were more than one) are considered and defined by you as ' ' Lucky ' ' then describe what you would call a salvo that reached it's mark. Aren't you counting anything the ' ' good guys ' ' land as intended, and anything the enemy fires as just Lucky. ( Are the hits that landed on BISMARCK Lucky or intended ? ) Face it, HOOD was defeated because of serious flaws in her design, errors because of Holland's not correctly identifying his target, and as important was the swollen sense of superiority that the British believed they had. Even you must acknowledge the serious threat that the BISMARCK presented to their convoys. Certainly the British Admiralty did. At that time BISMARCK was considered the most powerful battleship afloat, [[can't count Japan; or our warships, or even the NELSON class too slow]] she was a serious threat. And the orders were to British warships: only two or more shell engage BISMARCK. There was a good reason for respecting her capabilities, why don't you.
