I slept in a hammock in a tall ship (Navy training ship) for a long time and it is not as bad as they try to make it. It was actually quite comfortable. And yes, the same deck was used for sleeping, eating and training. The worst thing was being inactive, bored at anchor or with no wind.

The only survivor that lasted to the 20th century other than the Victory was the French Duguay-Trouin which escaped Trafalgar only to be captured 2 weeks later. The British renamed her to the HMS Implacable. In 1949 there was no interest by the English or the French governments in preserving her so she was scuttled. A crying shame!!! Did you heard about the 74 guns warship by Brest French designer Sane ? They were said sailing as fast as a frégate and as powerful as a 3decks ship. During Napoléon wars, RN used to seize these ships when possible and take all measurements in order to make copies. UK still had at least one original after 2nd world war and gave it to the French Navy after the German defeat. The Royale (other name of French Navy) used it as a target for other warships. It is written that the relative low quality of French Navy during that period is the consequence of the slaughter of aristocratic navy officiers during the Revolution.

Sorry to burst your Patriotic bubble, but the U.S.S. Constitution is the oldest commissioned ship that is still used. And by used I mean it can still go for a lovely sail in the Boston Harbor. Not to mention the Constitution's hull was practically impenetrable to the cannons at that time.
@daneelolivaw6023 жыл бұрын
Sorry to burst your Patriotic bubble , but VICTORY is the oldest commissioned warship in the world, commissioned in 1765, construction didn't start on constitution until October 1797, might be able to go for a run around Boston harbour, but it doesn't sail. And as for cannon balls bouncing off the hull, well, it was never hit with a 32pound cannonball was it?, the biggest RN ship that constitution fought was a 4th or 5th rated ship that carried 24pounders, and constitution certainly never fought a 1st rate, and was never hit with a 50 gun broadside.
@thelunchtabletalkers73583 жыл бұрын
@@daneelolivaw602 The HMS Victory doesn’t sail, thus making the US Constitution the oldest commissioned war ship that can sail, that’s my point. Not to mention the fact that it’s hull still took broadsides like a champ, if the 32 pounders would’ve done something to it then maybe the Royal Navy should’ve used them.
@daneelolivaw6023 жыл бұрын
@@thelunchtabletalkers7358 Of course Victory doesn't sail, but it's still a commissioned ship, and if you have any arguments about it, please take them up with the Royal Navy. And it's good to know you recognise that constitution is only the oldest commissioned warship on water, good. "It took broadsides like a champ", BUT only from warships that were smaller than herself, And these ships were too small to carry such large guns, constitution never fought a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th rated ship, That is MY point.
