I would like to add (having criticised your video) that I very much enjoyed watching you and it is the best walk around HMS Victory I have seen on KZbin. Thanks very much.

Thank you, I really appreciate it! Knowing what I know now, almost a year after I walked through HMS Victory, I wish I could go back and take all my footage with better low-light settings on my camera. I'm not too fond of the graininess and shaking of the footage, but we do what we can with what we've got. Thanks again!

Wonderful video, well done, shame about the weather though. I'm lucky, i get to visit the Dockyard four or five times a year, and never get bored, It's a shame you didn't get to see the one sail left that Victory used in the battle, it's on display at certain times during the year, and all the rips and holes are damage from the battle. I have read that Villeneuve had written in reports and diaries that he had an idea that nelson would use the tactics that he did, but there was nothing he could do to counter those tactics once the RN fleet had been spotted. I hope you can make it back when the Victory refit is complete. Once again, a great video, i really enjoyed it. Thank you.
@EmpalagationАй бұрын
Thank you very much! I would definitely love to make it back at some point once they've finished up the repairs and renovations, and also to see the original sail! I did not know about that! Thanks again for the great comment, I really appreciate it!

There was an entire video in the Victory museum detailing how they were going about restoring the ship, and with what methods, but I don't remember everything it mentioned. As for how long it will take,.. 15 years from when they started, supposedly. So another 13 years or so. Thank you for the wonderful comment! I truly appreciate it!

@@Empalagation it’s on my bucket list of things to see, that and the Mary Rose. I’ve got no excuse, I live in England. I even have an ancestor that’s listed in the Victory crew, I’m not going to say his name because apparently he was flogged for stealing.

@@giovanni6636 Hahaha, I'm sure every individual of the entire crew received some form of reprimand at some point, I'd imagine it's not easy to stay perfectly disciplined while you're out to sea for months on end. Whenever you manage to make it to the historic dockyard, keep in mind that the Mary Rose museum has a scheduled full-story visual experience explaining everything that happened in the main enclosure where the ship itself is. I managed to catch it and when it finished I wanted to record it, so I asked a security person when it would be played again, and they told me the next day 😭. From what I understood it's only ONCE per day, at 16:30, although I'm guessing times are subject to change every now and then. Something to keep in mind, at any rate. It was well worth it, even though I didn't mange to get any footage.

Wrong time of year, but you missed Porchester castle across the harbour. A roman shore fort, with a Norman keep in one corner, and an 11th century Norman church diagonally opposite, within the Roman walls. If you like military history, lighthouses, and castles, next time in England a day trip to Dover castle is worth it, Roman lighthouse, 11th century keep, napoleonic, 1st and 2nd WW gun emplacements, and a shed load of tunnels, with assorted functions over the millennia.

I'll have to keep those locations in mind for next time. I never know when "next time" will be, but I've got an ever-expanding list of things I want to see that I'll try to get around to at some point in life. Thanks for the recommendations!

It's HMS Victory. There is no 'The' in the title or in front of any RN ships. 😮, Portsmouth Dockyard wandered through there many a time whilst onboard Pompey based ships during my 22 years in the Senior Service. The Royal Navy, Trafalgar Day, celebrated every year with a service onboard and Trafalgar Night for the officers or Pickle night for the damned ratings. The 500 plus year history of the Royal Navy is woven deep into the Service.

Are you sure he said "Kiss me Hardy"? and not Kismet Hardy. Having been aboard the Victory and seen the size of the 32 pounders on the deck above where Nelson laid, you will be able to imagine the noise of many of these cannons being fired. I studied history whilst serving in the Royal Navy and was asked the question "what was Nelson thinking by dressing up in his full regalia for the battle as this would make him a highlighted target." my answer was "how am I supposed to know that" I was told by my teachers (who were Royal Navy history experts) the following facts. He was very religious (his father was a parish priest) He had committed the sin of adultery having a child with Emma Lady Hamilton in 1801. This was much more serious in those times than today. If Nelson had offended God, today is his chance to strike him dead. KISMET HARDY (FATE HARDY) but there was so much noise he could have said "Kiss me Hardy"
@Empalagation2 ай бұрын
I honestly have no idea what he said, I only included that because there are a few sources online that I found when I was doing my research that stated he possibly said that. I found it endearing enough that I decided to include it in the video. If only I we could go back in time and see the battle and witness what was truly said, that would be amazing! "Kismet Hardy" is a pretty good contender though. If he did in fact say that, it would have been pretty badass. Thanks for the wonderful comment!
@daneelolivaw602Ай бұрын
I believe he said "Kiss me Hardy". At least three people heard him use those words. Surgeon William Beatty, Purser Walter Burke, and Chaplain Alexander Scott. All survived the battle, and all reported hearing those words spoken.
@BikersDoItSittingDownАй бұрын
@@daneelolivaw602 did you read William Beatty's book "The Death Of Lord Nelson" as he did not record anything of the sort. " Lord Nelson said: 'Well, Hardy, how goes the battle? How goes the day with us?'- 'Very well, my Lord,' replied Captain Hardy. . . 'I am a dead man, Hardy. I am going fast: it will be all over with me soon. Come nearer to me. Pray let my dear Lady Hamilton [Lord Nelson's mistress] have my hair, and all other things belonging to me.' . . .Captain Hardy observed, that 'he hoped Mr. Beatty could yet hold out some prospect of life.' - 'Oh! no,' answered his lordship; 'it is impossible. My back is shot through. Beatty will tell you so.' Captain Hardy then returned on deck, and at parting shook hands again with his revered friend and commander."
@daneelolivaw602Ай бұрын
@@BikersDoItSittingDown I have read quite a few accounts and they all say "Kiss me Hardy", The National Maritime Museum, The Royal Collection agrees too. The Royal Marines History records that Nelson said "Kiss me Hardy", and that "Beatty Recorded that Hardy knelt and kissed him on the cheek, he then stood for a minute or two before kissing him on the forehead. Nelson asked "who is that"? and on hearing it was Hardy, he replied "God bless you Hardy" Beatty recorded these words. Beatty's words. If he didn't say these words, what was a captain doing kissing an admiral.
@BikersDoItSittingDownАй бұрын
@@daneelolivaw602 You know that what you say agrees with my original post. Maybe read it again! As for my reply to you about what William Beatty said, The book written by him is classed as secondary information and takes presidence over records written by those who were not there. You sound like you have a passion for history so you know this.

I listened to the first four minutes of your presentation, which on the whole was reasonable. However, may I point out to you that when referring to ships of the Royal Navy you do NOT put the prefix 'The' in front of their name. Therefore it is H.M.S. Victory NOT the H.M.S. Victory.
