The switch to oil and turbines did more than increase speed. Turbines were much more reliable and could maintain their speed as long as they had oil and working boilers. In the long run however the biggest advantage was oil fired boilers didn't require swarms of stokers to shovel coal into their boilers. Thus a smaller crew, needing fewer supplies.

Thing is the early turbines were direct drive, not geared and were therefore pretty ineffective compared to later models. Basically they wasted a lot of power that couldn't be used for propulsion. Not to mention needing a seperate turbine for going backwards.

@@JGCR59 Yeah, but triple expansion, the previous standard, could only at full speed for a few hours before they had to slow down and be adjusted. Oil fuel can save money many years after the war is over. One of the hidden costs of running a military organization is pensions. As an example the last US civil war pension (1861-65) was still being paid in May of 2020. So if you can reduce the number of personnel needed you can save money for a long time in the future.

According to Wiki, the sister ship HMS Viking was the only six funnel destroyer ever built. Back before WW1 for destroyers the Royal Navy back then gave contracts with only vague specifications to private shipyards with each shipyard more or less constructing their own design, so "sister ship" is a bit optimistic. I guess they were lucky that despite Zulu and Nubian being from two different companies they were similar enough to be joined together.

HMS Zubian is the equivalent of Godrick, the Grafted. I wonder how the grafting of these 2 ships must've been like for the workers. Having to align the deck's, and hull plating. I wonder if there was a visible difference between the bow & stern.

Please create a video about the history and significance of the U.S.S. Liberty AGTR-5, an auxiliary general technical research vessel that played a crucial role in various military operations and scientific research projects.

Kind of an odd question, maybe. But did the Royal Navy count Zulu and Nubian as lost ships, and the Nubian as a NEW ship?
