I was there 1995 to 2000 different sentences, i was an USLA, underschool leaving age first time i went, compulsory education and 4 or 5 circuits a week at least, still like a borstal, you would get roughed up if you went down the block, strict as hell, confined to cell down the block for a week was an experience to say the least, i had to grow up quick , bullying and hard arse old borstal screws, time went fairly quick though, thanks for giving us a voice Will, listening to your videos has stirred up alot of memories, some bad, some good, just nice to know me and some of my friends old codefendents not alone in our experiences

Really enjoyed this mate. Brought memories flooding back. I was in Portland from Feb 2002 till june 2003. I came down from HMP Chelmsford after being there for 2/3 days after sentencing. Went on to Hardy for about 2 weeks then on to Raleigh. If I remember rightly it was at that point they changed the induction wing too another wing. From about August 02 I managed to wangle getting on to Rodney, the drug free therapeutic community wing where I stayed till I got out in 03. After completing all the courses I was also on outside gardens at the end of my sentence. Is mad remembering the gym and the circuit training etc. Was a tough tough jail but I look back with fond memories as it must have worked as Ive never been back. Touch wood. Am going to now listen through some of your other podcasts and thank you for taking me down memory lane. Keep up the good work.

I was on Rodney from Dec2000-Jul2002, so left just before you arrived. If you remember the 1-10 scoring system for cell cleanliness, I invented that. I liked Rodney. Before that I was in Reading, Feltham, and then Grenville, Nelson (as a juvenile) and Benbow in Portland. Benbow, Drake and Raleigh are places no young person should have to experience.

there's 600 lads in there and every one of them has a different experience. I was pretty weak at the age of 18 and probably looked a bit like a victim. the lad in the cell next door to me probably had a breeze of a time while I was going through hell, so yeah I'm glad he's home now. hopefully you won't be back again

Good listening to your story bro. I was in there as well back in 2003 - 2005. On bembo wing once it opened but before that can’t remember, possibly rileigh? I didn’t mind it too much in there, mainly just read tonnes of books - just like you mentioned, once I found a good author, read their entire collection - played lots of pool which was probably the best part of being in there, and also done lots of painting and drawing which is really what saved me in there. Not exactly a great time but still good memories in a weird way and definitely I value the experience as it made me the person I am today.

Another great video as always. I only discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago but I’m hooked. I remember when I was in a HMYOI Portland or Portland Bill as they called it had a hell of a reputation everyone used to say you don’t want to be sent there. The other 2 which had a bad rep were Aylesbury and Feltham. But Portland was the worst one I heard about. Did you watch the documentary about Portland? It’s here on YT.

Thanks I really enjoyed listening to this. I was there 83-84. Borstal to YCC. I was Rodney house orderly after a stint in the laundry. I don’t recognise what you experienced in common with how it was in 83/84. There was only 1 fight in the house. We would all watch Dallas on Thursday evenings in the big tv room, lots of banter never any fighting, like being in the pub with your mates, no fighting over snooker or anything else. We still had slop out, and contractors were fitting light switches in the cells, so after I’d left they must’ve dropped the lights out time. We had medium wave radios, colour tv up on a stand, , big snooker table and a couple of table tennis tables, there was a small room with a record player, the screws had pegged the volume knob to low. No female staff, there was a woman barber would come in but I never saw another woman. We were a bit separate, through the tunnel, we didn’t seem to mix with the other houses. I only left the house to go to the dining rooms and trampoline once a week. I think people had changed a lot by the time you went there. There were 2 Asian lads, Akalak and Kayami, in for drugs, and I can’t remember any blacks in the house, except the previous house orderly, Ronnie fine or vine. Lots of Welsh. It was a very easy going house with just one twat, Pausey from slough. I was unlocked early, the farm boys first for milking, then I’d be unlocked as soon as the screws had done a roll check, so I could slop out and wash in peace, then full unlock. I’d have to make tea for the screws, and one for myself, serve at the dining hall. And take back a big jug of sweetened milk to the house for the day’s coffee. If I got back with a full jug after everyone had a swig in the tunnel. I never went into the Victorian blocks, Rodney was rebuilt like Hardy, cos it was bombed in the war. Theres a documentary on KZbin I think it’s called Bad Boys, it’s filmed in Rodney in about 1999, Mr Blewitt was still there then but the whole regime was totally different. The house was a shit hole, it was immaculate in my time there, Not at all like it was 16 years earlier. The calibre of the inmates reflects the calibre of society outside, in chronic and unrecoverable decline. I’m gonna listen to your other stuff.

The jail was all electronic, we didn’t have cell keys and all interconnected doors etc were electronically unlocked. The computer at that time was as big as a double wardrobe, I guess an iPhone would manage the job now easily.

I’m not proud about this but I was in Portland when it was still a Borstol 1978-1979, I was just 15 years old, I spent time in the punishment block and believe me you ain’t gonna get a tougher punishment block then Portland Borstol, and that’s no bullshit, I wonder if they still have the copper kettle that was at the end of the block, it came from the Napoleonic wars, you had to shine the copper kettle so the screws could actually see their faces on it, no bullshit I went down there twice for fighting once when I was just 15 years old for just 3 days and they let me back up into Nelson house and I turned 16 6 days after I was allowed to go back to Nelson house and within a week I’m back down the block and this time they gave me no mercy, I spent 8 days down the block in E-Wing and after that session that was enough for me I can tell you and I never had another fight that’s for sure.

Night time sanitation on Hardy😂, good way of getting out for 6 mins and getting a rolly off your mate, Dartmoor was simlar on the induction wing, ring your bell, your tally flag thing would fall down to let the screws know, eventually 3 man unlock then go to the toilet where your mate would go out before you and leave a paper, tobacco or dirty mag stashed down the side of the toilet in the recess, sneak it back down your pants, just a good way of sharing stuff in the night, yer portland was medieval harsh

Went there Portland for the inter prison bricklaying competition 2000 from onley YOi I remember my mate I went with as you did the competition in pairs paddy say “Gov” to one screws when we first got there as not knowing where fuck all was he shouted back “luv” I’m not your fucking luv you call me “sir” here lol remember the lines on the stairs for going up and down and the cell we had was a right shithole slop out and all that and what you said about pressing the buzzer at night and having so much time to get back to your cell and remember a sign saying about not sending lines with razor blades on them for the seagulls and sending food to them also lol and when first getting there seeing this one lad wearing these horrible jeans and a horrible gold colour tie on onley was completely different much better and there was definitely skull duggery going on in the brick laying competition with the muck I remember we had to wait ages as we run out that happened time and time again but the Portland boys they didn’t go without I noticed and they were nice and close to the Mixer whilst we was the farthest away and MR. Samson the bricklayer teacher from onley and the two screws we went down with in a mini bus all cuffed up together me and paddy by our legs and wrists I’ll never forget that still got pictures taken from the bricklaying competition and the t-shirts we all had to wear and the bricks they were given by a local building firm were terrible does anyone one else here remember the competition there?
