Thank you so much dude, you are the only one who explained the former charge calculation, I tried for so long but couldn't fit how to calculate it, thanks a lot.

Professor Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for showing/explaining how to draw the Lewis structure of Nitric Acid in AP/General Chemistry. The formal charge calculation of each atom increases my understanding of the Lewis structure. This is an error free video/lecture on KZbin TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor.

thank you. But following the rules of formal charge, shouldn`t we get one pair of electrons from the O(-) to share with the N(+)?

'If the number of electrons is a multiple of 8 then nitrogen atom will have no lone pairs' Why is that so?

@josepaulofer.2 жыл бұрын
@@bellakiska Probably is a way that you can predict if the central atom will have lone pairs: If you subtract the number of eletrons by the closest multiple of 8, the rest will be the number of electrons in the central atom. At least is what he does in that video, at the time 0:56: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZi8oYd5l86hptU

Nitrogen can form 3 bonds. Why can form 4 bonds here? newbie asking thanks
@liviaqencka3 жыл бұрын
Cuz it should be completed with 8 electrons in outer shell
@bellakiska3 жыл бұрын
one of the hydrogen-oxygen bonds is a coordinate covalent bond. this means that the nitrogen is sharing two electrons with oxygen, but the oxygen isn't sharing any electrons with the nitrogen. this results in both having complete valence shells. hope that made sense:)

If hydrogen has 1 valence electron, and Oxygen had a lone pair, wouldn't there be one extra electron if they bonded? I thought oxygen would contribute one electron to make a covalent bond with the electron hydrogen donates

at 1:44 your nitrogen seems to have 4 valence electron. missing a dot, the +1 formal charge on nitrogen is due to this dot
