This song is adapted from the poem of the same name by poet Ho Xuan Huong - she is known as the queen of Nom poetry. Banh Troi is a Vietnamese dish known as "Drift cake". To boil the cake, it must be boiled in a pot of boiling water (submerged many times until it is cooked), the traditional cake is white. From the image of cake floating on water, Ho Xuan Huong has metaphorical images of the woman at that time. Life is floating, no progress, can't decide your own life. But the woman at that time still tried to live and always had the desire to rise and preserve the beauty of the old woman. My English is limited. Bánh (cake) trôi (float) nước (water) is a sticky ball cake which floating on sugar water. It's kinda yummy till you try the 3rd. It's also a acient poem's name which was use by a woman poetry to describe women's fate at that time :)
