1 in 20 people have a problem with hoarding - this extreme compulsion to stockpile items or not throw things away can have a severe impact on your wellbeing.
Our dedicated team are here to dig people out from being trapped in their own homes.
Serial shopaholic Janice has filled her 3-bedroom Liverpool home with piles of clothes, household items and broken furniture. But when workmen couldn’t fit a new boiler because of the hoard, it was a wake-up call and Janice is now determined to clear her home. But when local extreme cleaner George comes to help, Janice struggles to let go of her past.

How do people have the money to buy so much, that you fill a house? I barely have money for absolute need.

Instead of buying clothes to meet people, start buying food for one of those food donation service centers and volunteer to help out. You'll make human contact and also help people who can't even afford the minimum amount of food to eat.

The British hoarders are so polite compared to their surly American counterparts.

It’s true. I’m American & I agree 💯!!!! Our hoarders are so entitled & absolute nightmares to deal with.

I work for a disabled woman who never goes anywhere, unfortunately, but Dr appointment maybe once a month if that. Yet she addicted to online shopping for clothes. She never wears anything but her pajamas. She even buys hella shoes yet yet physically is unable to wear them. The shopping is filling avoid but she doesn't see it. I try to get her to go out, to at least have places to go to wear the clothes. But she wants nothing to do with it.

It's a sense of normality for her, I guess. She must be feeling the emptiness in her life. Buying stuff must keep her occupied, so she doesn't feel something she doesn't want to. Instead of telling her, what she should do, help her to get a hobby. Maybe making things with wool? Like small carpets? With a punching needle? It's easy to manage. She can make gifts and get appreciation. Or she could paint, maybe painting with numbers (don't know how it's called).

@@elale8016 I have tried and tried. It's to the point she gets upset if you try to get her into anything. She's just really depressed and refuses help.

What a difference, compared to hoarders here in the States! American hoarders come up with all kinds of bizarre reasons why they keep things. Not to mention, they are rude and argumentative.

@Lokisqueen22 This lady Jan could have had a meltdown if she'd been pushed too hard and too fast. I sense that they structured their work operations very effectively. Where the client mainly hears the lead man's voice. And the other fellas are the worker bees. No loud voices from them, no disrespect. They also identified which zones of the house would have the most impact for her, after a decade of being buried under all the bags, and goods. I think some of the shame would have been taken away by that team as well.

Hoarding is a mental illness. The cause and the clutter need to be addressed or within a short time....all the clutter comes back.

I think it might help if the person was taken out of the home for a month and the house was left exactly as they left it. While they are away they can be taken in supervised trips to the shops etc and given the tools to resist buying. Then take them back to their home so they can see it with fresh eyes

Therapist needs to be there to process the way that the hoarder is thinking... Or emotions running through them. I think that's the hard part...
