Try to do this. Fill one trash bag a day. Just one bag a day means in a month, you’ve gotten rid of 30 bags. The clutter probably seems overwhelming. No mAtter how depressed you get, one bag is doable. Aim then for at least one bag or box or laundry basket of donations a week. If it doesn’t have a home, don’t keep it. Don’t buy anymore until you have a handle on what you already own. Psychologists will tell you the high from buying only lasts a little under four hours. Find joy in charity. My mother had a collection of beanies babies filling an entire closet packed neatly away in plastic storage bins. I gave them all away to an agency that worked with abused children. The children could pick one after a difficult therapy session. They were so thrilled to have the donation and followed up twice to tell me how much a child was thrilled to choose one. It’s hard to get rid of your mom’s and grandmother’s. If it’s good stuff, try to find a charity that your mother would support. I gave all of her barely worn church clothes, tons of them, and over 100. Handbags, most still tagged and never used, to a charity that helped women get employment. The clients had to take classes and earned credits to get clothes for their new jobs. They also gave credits for clothes for women at shelters who had left abusive partners with virtually nothing. Try to find outlets for your donations that give you satisfaction. That will help.

@@j.j.9123 That is good advice. One trash bag a day. Or one donation box a day. Also the charity is really good. People hoard because of some sense of lack. There is nothing more fulfilling in life, then helping those, who need and deserve it. And if one is not a people person, one can take shelter dogs out for a nice walk. The possibilities are endless. This gives more back to a person, than he or she has given. It clears the mind and fills the heart with joy.

Thank you for thinking of those who will have to do it when you’re gone. My kids and I just spent 2 years and thousands upon thousands of dollars cleaning up their dad’s house and property. It was awful.

@@DVD927 It's the same for me too. I'm decluttering my house because I can't stand the tight spaces anymore. Just yesterday, I through out spools of ribbon which were 9 years old. I used them once when I bought them and never again! I'm dreading going through my stationary hoard. All the colors make me so happy but the amount of stuff is crushing :(

I suspect I might be on the spectrum ( over fifty also) and have two bio grandsons who are autistic! I collect so much and I got a new addition to an antidepressant I’m already taking! Katie bar the door! I’ve been cleaning for three days! And it’s been amazing! So far I’ve gotten more stuff out and more laundry done in days! I’ve been able to coordinate everyone in the household so they’re helping! The dishwashers being ran three times daily! I got through three containers and found some items I needed and had packed away! My adult daughter is thrilled! I’ve been having an easier time trashing stuff! The kids are spontaneously cleaning up as I do so finally I’m leading them to a better lifestyle! Don’t give up! Sometimes depression can make us feel unable to deal with this situation!! I’m unpacking stuff we were packing to move the husband and I separated! So a lot of traumas too!

I agree. Starting with things that have clearly deteriorated or have less of an emotional connection is best. I found that myself and, over time, it's like my brain began to see the rest of my stuff in a different way. I really believe it's a good way to re-shape our perspectives.

I'm not a hoarder, though stuff just collects over the years, I have a very LARGE gardens, it is over two acres, one just gets soooo very many pots and garden accessories being stored, it all just adds up and always needs to be tidied and sorted out. As well, is easy to keep things around the house that one just "might" need or seems a bit too valuable to toss out! Though, right now am going through my basement, a friend has stored and abandoned masses of her possession here now for what must be ten years, the lady has not even spoken to me in years, soooo I given some of her things to the second hand drop off and as well so much is just junk to the dump. This has given me good incentive as well to clean out the rest of my large basement to the bare essentials.

Less junk less problems keep saying that to yourself that’s how I cured myself and when I gave something away, it was a fight, but then after a while, I thought I won’t have to clean that anymore. I don’t have to worry where to put it anymore. It’s so easy you just have to talk to yourself about things you don’t likeremember, Less is more.

@inegundersveen1487 We are in the same boat. However, I refuse to be someone's victim... disease/nuerodivergent disorder or not... SO start throwing about stuff that are not so obvious when they are at work or when they have gone away for a few days especially stuff that has not been touched for years. They will not even know that the stuff has been donated to trashed whatever is appropriate. You too need peace of mind and a healthy clean environment. The hoarders should also respect us, enough is enough. I have put boundaries and have said that anything left in xyx rooms will be discarded and I kept my word. Believe it or not, the hoard is now in one room and that is an "ok" compromise. The hoarder knows that if they dare to leave anything in the garage, the kitchen, the living room, any of the bedrooms or the dining room, the stuff will mysteriously disappear AND I swear I have not seen whatever it is they are looking for.🤫

The being overly friendly thing just hit me like a comet. My version of that is being more interested in getting to the purpose of our interaction and I wanna skip the niceties stuff. Behaving in a friendly way or envisioning every person as Friend Material so I can get to the next or more interesting idea. And now reactions to me behaving that way now make a lot more sense...... I'm not sure if that's a purely aspe thing but it's sure my thing

Therapy helps a great deal. There is also medication for depression and anxiety. When a house is clean and livable, there is more opportunity for increased social contact. Most people hoard because they are trying to fill a void in their lives similar to why some people over eat for pleasure. Hoarding is a disease but there is help. Some elderly people hoard because it just gets away from them or they can’t resist a bargain or they think it’s worth even a quarter. There are still a lot of people who grew up in the depression. I’ve found that when elderly people like my mother began hoarding, hers was mainly a shopping addiction, they could still manage their checkbook, pay bills and so forth but their judgement was affected. My mother could well afford to collect but does one really need 60 cookie jars? She never thought or. Collected like that before she turned 70.
