@tobiasbanks37437 жыл бұрын
We don't get a lot of 3D platformers because they're hard to design. Just ask Sonic Team. There was a very brief renaissance where developers were forced to make 3D platformers to sell consoles, and we got a few gems out of that trend. But in general, the natural state of a platformer is 2D.
@14hourz827 жыл бұрын
because 3D is hard and more expensive than 2D pixel art
@Vaguer_Weevil7 жыл бұрын
Obviously 3D is harder to make than 2D, don't need to be a programmer to know that. It's probably not even about difficulty, it just takes more time but they'd rather stick to simple 2D designs than make more unique 3D designs because it means they can push out more games at half-assed quality.
@RyanHall427 жыл бұрын
I dont buy that 3d platformers are harder to make than 2d when most game middleware is designed for 3d games. I think the issue is nobody is nostalgic for dense fog about 5 feet away to cover up clipping and popin. Nobody's especially nostalgic for how early 3d platformers looked, where pixel art is now seen as an art choice and not a system limitation for the era.

Chill about Doki Doki guys, it's entire presentation is built around making you judge it as upbeat cartoon pornography so that it can pull off the twist. It's perfectly reasonable to assume that it is what it looks like. Don't pretend that you didn't originally play it because you thought the same thing.
@XoxeroThePoet7 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's really a twist. I mean, once 'Psychological horror' is a tag you've kind of spoiled the twist. Plus, I could direct you to flash games on Newgrounds that have done the same thing since the early 2000s.
@lewdcynthia72647 жыл бұрын
Those tags are user-defined and weren't originally there. That's like saying Sixth Sense doesn't have a twist because everyone knows it already. And I never said it was a shining star of originality for doing so, so no clue what you're on about there. Kimi to Kanajo did it first and better.
@TriangleChloros7 жыл бұрын
To be fair, they put 'not for children or the easily dismembered' on the first screen of the game. You can't warn people 'fucked up shit is about to happen', then pretend you don't want them to know there is fucked up shit about to happen - either the warning was pointless and counterproductive, or that's not actually the twist. In this case, I'd argue that the twist in Doki Doki is really more about what happens, not the fact that anything happens at all. (And for the record, I actually did play it for the horror. And you have *no* idea how many 'psychological horror' games on Steam I've bought only to find out they... weren't)
@Aurichalcam7 жыл бұрын
Lewd Cynthia Actually the game's multiple warnings should be plenty indication that something horrible happens. Doki Doki isn't meant to be a "trap" where someone plays it, then unexpectedly it turns into horror. It's a horror game, and Team Salvato want you to treat it as such. Dan Salvato is simply fond of the visual novel format, and it does make for excellent contrast with the horror.

So A Hat In Time's a 3D platformer Yahtzee actually liked So it's part of a genre he said can't possibly work actually working, it's amazing how something well built can actually make anything work well Edit: Seeing as I have everybody's attention, no I'm not going to beg for subscribers like what usually happens, this is far more imortant. @CuddleCuttlefish7 жыл бұрын
Wolfwood2057 yeah, it is actually a shame. As someone who has played the game in question I can say I understand why people want to spam Yahtzee comments to play it. But it is a shame that that couple seconds joke in the intro takes away focus from the rest of the video. It's not relevant and if anything it'll probably make him want to play it less. But that's the Internet community in a nutshell I suppose. Have to push on trends and personal agendas. And can't take jokes. At this point I think those are ground rules for anyone who use the Internet. P. S That said, if you haven't played it yourself I do recommend giving it a try. Even if you're not into the Dating sim formula (I'm not either, literally never played one before). The story the game is *actually* telling is incredibly interesting. And how it tells its story is equally interesting. That is as long as you can get past the beginning part. It plays like a normal dating sim for quite some time before things... change. But it effectively throws you off the loop. I mean. It's free. So little reason not to give it a chance at least.

I´m so pissed at the idea of A Hat in Time. I mean, I just checked it out, ...... and it looks amazing. But, why did it take Yatzee to make me find out about it. I knew about Yooka Laylee for years, but this game just pops up and seems a lot better. I feel like it will be similar to the new Ratchet & Clank, which I feel was severely overlooked, so people will keep on going about how 3D platformers are dead, yet they won´t buy this or R&C. Well, at least Cuphead was successful commercially and critically, so maybe indie developers will start making original cool material again, hopefully.
@sagafor117 жыл бұрын
it´s a shame that indie developers don´t really get the support they need, so they often need to make a quick cashgrab of a game. I mean, just imagine how demotivating it must be to make a great game, and then see a clusterfck like No Man´s Sky get a lot more attention. Thus indie developers start making huge concepts they can´t keep up with, and make horrible games. Strip it down to the basics, come up with a cool concept, and make the gameplay fun. It´s not that hard. Undertale, Shovel Knight, Owlboy, Cuphead, Bastion, Hotline Miami all got those things right, and they didn´t try to act like a AAA developer. They knew their limits and built on them. Sadly there are many games that just go under other peoples, and unfortunately even my radar.

I completely agree. There are always a bunch of great games being pushed under the rug for triple A titles that seem to just ride off the popular of a particular title or indie games that seem to never have a complete and unique experience in mind outside of being inspired by something. I feel like people really have to dig to find some awesome games. Hell, right now I'm excited for some neat looking games like Fight Knight, Jimmy and The Pulsating Mass, Indie Pogo, Beardblade, and The Mummy Demastered that should be coming out next year. =Y
@SinisterPixel7 жыл бұрын
Hat in Time has been in development for 5 years now. It's Kickstarter goal was a very modest £30,000 and it greatly exceeded that expectation. It kept getting delayed because the devs really wanted to make the experience perfect, but I think a lot of people just kinda lost interest in the project. Currently it's one of the most positively reviewed Steam games of all time and with the great workshop support and additional FREE content in development, Hat in Time definitely hasn't finished it's song. All it's going to take is for a couple of bigger KZbinrs to do some in depth coverage of this game and it will take off. It may even end up like Undertale, how the game was significantly overlooked on launch but after a big KZbinr covered it, it went viral.

The review makes it sound like the only challenging part of A Hat in Time is the bosses, but a lot of the platforming sections can be pretty difficult too. Also those lines that guide you to the goodies in some occasions are quite necessary, otherwise you would spend a lot of time combing through some rather complex scenery all over again.

I so disagree with what was said about hob. From the very start of the game the end goal was pretty clear if u were paying enough attention (get to the floating tower thing) sure it wasn't entirely clear why until the end but it is still there. The puzzles were fun, the platforming was fun the mechanics were cool and implemented well the combat was fun and sometimes hard. It also isn't done in an hour like most of these indie games nowadays which is really refreshing. I don't really see why he found hob so boring, it seems like a game that does all the hings that he complains games don't do but oh well, opinions are a thing i guess. It just makes me sad that this game doesn't seem to be getting any exposure right now and I feel like it really deserves it.

Yeah. Something you two, and anyone who may come across this thread, should know is that the developers of Hob and Torchlight (Runic) got completely gutted last year, along with the Gigantic devs (Motiga), by the publisher Perfect World (because Hob isn't actually an independent game at all, as one would think). So we may see less of these lower tier, tightly designed games like Hob and The Sexy Brutale, as publishers like Perfect World move towards the "live services" business model, in the next few years. Tis a shame.

Finally decided to give A Hat in Time a chance and, yeah, it's a really charming little game. Little rough around the edges but still pretty fun, despite its length.

Im seeing a lot of Doki Doki recommendations for Yahtzee, which is fair as it's good, but definitely not something for Yahtzee himself to play. Doesn't strike me as his cup of tea.

idk if it's a good game to do a full review on in general, as basically everything of note that happens in the game is in massive spoiler territory - his reasons for not properly reviewing Undertale come to mind.

He has since reviewed it. Yahtzee thought the horror part was like a badly-written "evil video-game" creepypasta.

After several months of putting it off, I finally watched the review for DDLC, and one part in particular that I remembered quite well was his story on how his awareness of the game began. Here. This video. Amongst these comments. I didn't know to what video he was referring to at the time. But The I watched this video, saw the reference, and immediately remembered the DDLC review. Of course, I had to scroll to the comments to see what he was talking about, and lo and behold was his analysis of the various reactions spot-on. This series, Yahtzee, and this community are all just so great.

Red Pandai isn't it more of a dating sim then a visual novel. Or, I guess really it's a psychological horror with the structure and game play of a dating sim. But regardless, you know what I mean. I guess I wouldn't know though, since I have very little experience with both VN and DS. Only having played one VN (which I still have yet to finish) and 0 DS's

I just want to underline your conclusion about Hob by mentioning that the end is a bloody two choice ending that feels incredible mandatory and the only input you got are a couple optional cardiographs or just destroy the obvious antagonist and get on with whatever you do now. But yes hmmm very atmospheric and stuff.

Once again, it's one of those games that are best experienced blind, so you can't tell people why they should play it besides that their preconceived notions are 100% incorrect. I feel like it was trying too hard at some points, but that, kind of, makes sense with the reveal towards end (and hinted at throughout the whole game). Analysis aside: Yuri was best girl, Natsuki was the most interesting, and Monika was the most dynamic (because of course she was).
@Mick0Mania7 жыл бұрын
A concept artist that worked on HOB actually gave a seminar in my college, so even though I never played the game I feel a connection to it. Apparently there is a lot of hidden lore to the game, or so she said, a shame it wasn't gripping enough to make the player want to explore them.
