Just curious as to how thick of aluminum could be welded with this setup? I’m guessing duty cycle would be an issue if this were to be used for say a Jet Boat kit ?
@ShinyInsanity Жыл бұрын
For aluminum the largest piece I've tested with is 1/4 inch using 210 volts. I haven't tried anything larger since that was the largest piece of aluminum scrap I had but it didn't have any problem. It was a relatively small piece though. It's a pretty capable machine though so far over the years.

I'm not a pro, just a hack, and that's about what my first efforts looked like with mine this week...after I fused the tip to the feed tube head because the wire stalled, first time I pulled the trigger. I saved the feed tube head somehow. After that I adjusted the feed rollers for lots of grip, that works better. Factory settings seemed hot, on mine. I'd like to see the smoke go away, not sure whats up with that, maybe more argon? I also had the best luck with sanding to clean off oxide. Flappy paddle disk for the win, again! Thanks for the vid!

Good luck with the welding. It definitely takes some practice but is fun to do. I think I was running around 20-25 on the argon if I remember. Glad you liked the video.
@akbychoice3 жыл бұрын
Don’t use the tools you use on aluminum with other metals. Keep them separate. Likely your wire feed was too slow burning back to the tip.
@lestergillis81714 ай бұрын
You may need to increase the argon flow a bit. There is too much soot. A good flow rate is normally higher for aluminum than it is for ferrous steels.

Hi there... I like how you achieved this, apparently in a short time. I'm trying to weld aluminum with the same machine (I guess HOBART 210), so could you please tell me the set up values you used for the machine, such as A and V? In my case I'm using .030 - ER 4043 wire. Thanks in advance!
@ShinyInsanity6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jess. It's been a little while since I played with this, but I pretty much used the settings that the machine, 210 MVP, recommended for this size materiel. Think it was 0.030" 4043 filler on 230V using pure Argon. The Voltage setting was 5 on the dial and wirespeed roughly 70. I say roughly because I think it started off too fast for me and I bumped it down a little. The material I was welding was 1/8" 6061. Hope that helps.

How hard would it be to hook a spool gun to a handler 140? Or can it be done?
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
The 140 is not spool gun ready as far as I know. I have seen conversion adapters that require some wiring that would allow it, but can't speak to their effectivesness. If you're handy with rewiring things and not afraid to void the warranty it can be done.
@patm61034 жыл бұрын
How did this hook up to the welder? I've 210 and just bought this spool gun at an auction.
@ShinyInsanity4 жыл бұрын
It's fairly straightforward. Just disconnect the regular trigger lead cables and attach the Spoolrunner lead cable. There is also a switch inside the 210 that you have to switch to the use the spool gun. It's labelled with a picture so you can't mess it up. Attach your gas, ground and plug it in and you're all set to go.

Yeah I still use it from time to time for really small projects, but unfortunately I haven't gotten any better since I don't practice much. I think if you have a lot of aluminum projects it would be worth it since it does make the process easier. If you are only doing one or two small projects you could make it without it with some prep and care. For me it was worth it since it's just a toy I wanted to play with and learn. Hope that helps.

@ShinyInsanity6 жыл бұрын
@@Bill-YellowDogWelding There is just a switch inside the welder itself that you have to flip to use the spoolgun. The polarity should be the same as what you are using for regular steel which is DC eletro positive. I think the only time it's flipped is when using flux core.
