I was there in 2005. It looked nothing like that then, before they realized they had a tourist attraction.

For anyone curious why, the original was built like a movie set, i.e. with cheap and temporary structures. Most of it was taken down after filming but rain delayed deconstruction to the point locals found out and started asking for tours of the incomplete set. There was money to be made and all three parties (Land owners, Peter Jackson, and movie right owners) all agreed for the Hobbit movies that Hobbiton would be rebuilt but with permanency in mind with stronger and longer-lasting building material, with tour tickets, food, and merch sales being distributed among the three parties.

@@TheOnlyBongo They should have gone one better. Making actual hobbit homes. Then, they could rent them, AirBnB like. I'm sure people would pay a decent amount, especially if there was a small fireworks show, or some other night time attraction. Now, add in if the could find "actors" to play as actual hobbits, going about their business, while you tour the place. Just thinking out loud here. Oh, and if they did this, those homes could be used if they ever wanted to create a new, lore friendly story out of whole cloth, where those homes could play a part.

It seems to rain a lot there. If I'm ever lucky enough to get over there and it starts raining I'm going to camp out in the Green Dragon until it stops. No matter how long it takes. 😁

We are sub-tropical, weather does change a lot in one day. Its best to come around Sept-April where there is "less rain and clouds" and more blue sky and sun.

how did you travel to hobbiton? You drive there or took bus? I am going there from Auckland. Any advise to get there by bus?

It's a bout 2.5 hours drive from Auckland. We drove there. It was an amazing and magical road trip ever!

The Green Dragon Inn and the mill was in Hobbiton the Prancing Pony was in Bree. Remember the four Hobbits had to travel out of the Shire to get to Bree. Only Hobbiton survives LOTR/ The Hobbit no Rivendell or Bree unfortunately.

A grey day tour of the imagination going nowhere...loud annoying music, tour guide/tourists talking loudly and incessantly, fake themes: "hobbitations: elvedahl...", and a total waste...Build cabins, raise year round crops, sell crafts, house, feed, clothe, and educate people in need..."Give something worthwhile, not wasteful..."

I enjoyed the tour (except for the monotonous music). From watching other recorded tours, the tour guides actually provide lots of interesting information about what you are seeing. Got to go there!
