On a bit of a 72nd scale plane kick at the moment [doing a few of Arma Hobby's excellent 2nd WW subjects] so I have ordered this too. Looks great. Thanks N.

With regard to the details you’re seeking clarification on, my view is. It’s your model, make it the way you want. If you want to put a late model something on an early plane, who cares. I make models to enjoy the process and will paint it whatever colour I want, that’s why there’s an X-Wing fighter from Star Wars painted and decaled like a Spitfire hanging over the pond in the garden.

Hi Nigel, I have the Revell edition of this kit still in its box, will look at the instructions to see if there is any variations. Tony

Never ever trust drawings when researching something. Also, never use restored samples as your reference.. both can send you down the wrong route..

Nigel, It is my understanding that the scouting missions out of Midway were not loaded with bombs, because, as you pointed out, they needed to maximize search range. Also, wing-tip floats would be raised if landing on land, or when transitioning out of the water onto the sloped concrete ramp at the base. I have no knowledge about the propeller tip colors.

I'm sure you're right on both counts Tron. i have now found pics of Midway Cats and they don't have the fuel dumps either.

Nothing to do with the model but seeing that you love the Catalina, just a note to say that a company in the US is reopening production of this aircraft with all mod cons for a market seen as in dire need of this type, which is now assessed as being more capable than any other amphibious aircraft anywhere! Deliveries to start in 2029 and the Department of Defense is interested...!.

Responding to your comments re the "walk-around" booklet. I have the documents from the US National Naval Aviation Museum which were used for their Catalina cutaway colours. When it was received by the museum it was repainted according to the original paint specifications and I have those documents which I am happy to share, just not sure how best to do that. I know museums like the NNAM are diligent when getting the colours correct - unlike some private warbird operators. I know this because I was one of two consultants on the American Air Museum at Duxford and was greatly impressed with their commitment. So, rest assured, verified by the staff at NNAM, this Catalina was repainted but according to the original documents. And, as said, happy to share the docs.

Hi Nigel. I don't have answers to your questions. You were saying that you thought those cut away interiors were accurate. Can you tell what the Green interior colour is via those pictures? I also wonder if it would be more likely that they may have carried air dropped depth charges, instead of bombs?
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it's the US interior colour Andy, but it could be the slightly lighter one. In fact, there was no actual spec for the green colour until later in the war so a mixture is also acceptable. The colours are Mixed Green, Interior green and Zinc Chromate. There are pics out there where different colours can clearly be seen in the same assembly.

I’d like to ask a question about some verbiage. When you said that there was a Mediterranean version, you said “ English version, or the British version shall I say” What is the difference and why the “correction?
@NigelsModellingBench

England is a country, Britain , Great Britain or the United Kingdom is a union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Re Bombs. On anti-submarine maritime patrols, yes. Looking for Aircraft carriers, Battleships and cruisers, etc, - extremely doubtful. Dropping bombs would be the last thing they or their superiors would want! Range, radio and a rapid retreat would be the priorities!

@@NigelsModellingBench I found a reference relating to the Battle of Midway where it does refer to the aircraft as a 'Patrol Bomber'. So maybe it did regularly carry bombs. KZbin deletes the post, though if I try and add the link.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think P stands for Patrol, B for Bomber and Y for Flying boat, so it was capable of dropping bombs and torpedoes but I wonder if it carried them on patrol missions? I would have thought they would want range? The weight and aerodynamics of the bombs would surely affect range?

@@NigelsModellingBench Yeah. At Midway, Nimitz needed information, and the farther out they could go, the quicker he'd get it. Common sense would dictate that fuel and weight considerations would override anything else. Additionally, This is what it says about the American pilot who spotted the Bismark. 'At the early morning briefing on May 26, 1941, Smith discovered the squadron’s mission that day was to find the Bismarck, which had eluded the ships and aircraft shadowing it. Normally for reconnaissance missions, the Catalinas’ anti-submarine loads of four depth charges were removed. But time was of the essence. The depth charges stayed on'. Ensign Smith was there to train Brits so presumably, they may have been following standard American practices?
