Not gonna lie, i got a good chuckle @7:21 when you couldn't figure out why it wasn't steering. I never seen the rudder cable pulled, so first i assumed it was edited out. Then you started talking about tracking issues :P That aside overall the Compass isn't bad, its a good versatile recreational platform while still being easily cartopable. The PA is a far better fishing platform, but weighs and costs twice as much.
@BRandomFishing2 жыл бұрын
My good friend Joshua B fishing has a PA. It is a beast!!! He even has live scope on it. I really did feel so stupid about the rudder. I bought it used and thought the guy screwed me over, haha.

Absolutely love my Compass, so maneuverable WHEN the rudder is down. Those grey clamps on the cranks of the drive can be pressed to adjust the leg length in seconds anywhere. A tip for in weeds, if you push one pedal all the way foward the fins will be up against the hull, from there just do very small back and forth movements, this will flutter the fins to move you but won't be down amongst the weeds, don't cross over the cranks, you want to keep the fins close to the hull.
@BRandomFishing3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I used it in some shallow sand and it worked great too. As for the pedals..... I actually got an allen wrench and took out the pin to adjust them the first time. Then I was like it cant be this hard, so i watched a 2 minute youtube video and saw how to adjust like you said. Oh well, I always say fish learn repeat, and I seem to be repeating the learning part more and more, haha

Congratulations on the upgrade! I had the hobie outback back in the day sold it, now I'm really thinking to get compass 👍 thank you for the video.
@BRandomFishing3 жыл бұрын
It is so much lighter than the outback and it fits in the back of my tiny truck with the tail gate up. I really like it, it does not hold as much under the hull as my ocean kayak prowler 13 but the mirage drive is a necessity for lake fishing in any kind of wind. I am really looking at he lynx for my wife and if you don't need any under hull storage, it looks like an awesome boat.
@nikushim66652 жыл бұрын
@@BRandomFishing I wouldn't say its that much lighter over the outback, Its about a 15 pound difference unrigged. Compared to the PA12 though its like a 42 pound difference (56 for the PA14).

Be sure to get you a leash for your drive. If you ever roll there is a chance it will sink to bottom of the lake. My Old Town PDL drive can get through a lot of weeds just by forcing forward and reverse until it chews up anything wrapped around the prop, but it makes a lot of noise doing that, and sometimes just doesn't work. The mirage drive you can just go. They are real nice. Great choice on a new platform.

Congrats on the compass! You also want to get the compass loader, it's worth having as it protects your rudder and gives you a great handhold when loading.😎
@BRandomFishing3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks for the tip. I just watched a youtube video on it and it does look great!
@Cyfi713 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the loader is the first thing I got for mine. I'm keeping the round hatch but I did put another 8 inch hatch up front and that's nice to have storage and access up front. I put some pad eyes in with the rubber coated rivets for a drive leash and a bow and stern tie downs. Got the scotty mount
@blueeyedjack2 жыл бұрын
I agree about the loader. I still don't understand not having a flip up rudder but I'm getting used to it. I am terrified that I'm going to forget and tilt up the bow and grind the rudder into the pavement somewhere. I try to remember to put the bow of the boat in the back of my truck first so that the rudder area hangs off. I didn't get the loader, but I did put a handle across the back of the boat just above the tow handle so that I can have a better grip and lift with two hands. However, I'm still considering the loader.

Good video man I did enjoy this. Congratulations to you on your pedal drive kayak. I've been looking for a while to get one myself. The only thing that stopped me from getting one was the pedal straps. I went to go demo 1 and I could not get my foot to fit through the straps because of it being very very extremely wide. I could only get three toes in between the straps and it was very discomfort & embarrassing too. The salesman said the straps could not come off and he asked me how wide was my foot cuz he'd never seen anyone with very extremely wide feet with very fat wide toes before. I felt a little embarrassed telling him that my foot was 6 1/2 inches wide. It's embarrassing enough to see that my toes are very very fat and wide & straight across but I'm not ashamed of it just a guy who has very extremely wide feet with extremely wide toes. Thank you for showing me how those straps come off. Those kayak Wheels they are lifesaver. I have a set for my kayak and I love how I can park my vehicle load my kayak up and walk down to the boat ramp with everything. I have had so many people ask me about those kayak Wheels. I launch my kayak the same way you did front of the kayak in the water and then lift up the back of the kayak up & my wheels come out in the water. Put my wheels in the Scupper holes too. Don't beat yourself up man first time you having a pedal drive kayak and and you are getting used to it Mistakes going to happen. Thank you for the good video brother.

Thanks for watching and I do love how the straps came off. It made pedaling a dream. I have gotten used to the drive and rudder now and I cant believe i didn't make this purchase years ago. It is so much more fun being able to cover water and fish at the same time, especially in the wind.

@@BRandomFishing you are welcome man that is awesome to hear. Oh I can believe it you love it with those straps off. It look like you was having trouble getting your foot to fit through the straps. Imagine me with a extremely wide foot that is 6 1/2 inches wide trying to fit through those straps. With those straps off it does make pedaling a dream. That's been the only thing that stopping me from getting a pedal drive. That's awesome that you have gotten used to the drive & the rudder now. You definitely cover more water with a pedal drive easier in the Wind. Me and my son went kayaking this weekend in 94 degree weather and was fighting wind and was not going nowhere. Me and my son got sunburn really bad on our face , arms , legs , feet & we are in so much pain , sore , and blisters on our arms , & feet. Very painful to walk man. Brandon your wheels are missing the bungee no biggie but it’s made to load and unload magical 😬 once they are out you slide your yak in the water using the wheels (works wonder for my heavy beast) but if you have your yak load it like you do camping etc (I saw it on KZbin)

I have a Hobie Compass and a 13’ Hobie Revolution. It was painful watching you for 2 reasons. RELEASE THE RUDDERRrrrrrrrr!😱 OMG, could you hear me? If my boat is not responsively steering it’s most likely because I have not released the Compass rudder, or the rudder on the Revolution, which is a flip-up rudder, gets stuck because when you transport it you tuck it under a bungee. More than once I’ve had to get out of my boat, in higher water than I would like, to release the rudder from under the travel bungee. Mortifying on a busy launch area. Also, if you replace the rudder on the Revolution with a sailing rudder which is larger and more responsive, you must remember to tuck the carry handle into the special bungee that they have for that. Otherwise, it will be interfere. Understandably, you were taking your frustrations out on your forward and reverse cables. Be gentle with those things. You don’t want to ever have to replace a drive. And when you’re yanking on those cables, please make sure that your rudder is in a neutral position. I couldn’t tell what size bed on your truck you have, but I transport mine in the back of the Tundra. I just flop the gate down, put the bow of the boat on the gate, pick up the stern and shove kitty corner, boat bottom down. I have been putting down a big piece of cardboard, less friction and it’s easier to shove. Then ratchet tie and put a cheap safety vest flag on the back. Hobie gives you a very easy to understand instruction booklet. It’s easy to forget in the excitement of it all, but put that little mental checklist in your brain as you launch and right at the top is release the rudder. I’m 75 +, if I can do it, so can you. You’re gonna love your boat. There is nothing like a Hobie.

@@BRandomFishing I will say that I commend you for even posting it. Certainly a learning experience. My first time out, my son took me because he's experienced. There I was, in this brand new highfalutin bright hibiscus red Hobie that everybody was looking at. I didn't release the rudder, I was in a very busy boat ramp and not once, but twice! went into the kiddy swim area that was roped off, and went over the ropes. And twice, he had to come and rescue me. And, that's why I'm so freaking smart about rudders!!!

That’s what the back seat area of the truck is for or put your stuff in some type of storage container. I put my waders and other stuff in storage bins in the bed with my compass and nothing flies out. If it can’t roll it probably won’t fly out of the truck no matter how fast you drive. I’ve driven from PA to Florida without anything flying out of the truck with the tailgate down.
