People underestimate having rudder controls on both sides until they fish out of a kayak with them and they see just how much you use them. I believe Hobie is the only one that offers ambidextrous steering too. At least 5 years ago when I got my Pro Angler they were and it was honestly one of the features that made me go Hobie. I steer with my Right hand 95% of the time and all other kayak manufacturers put the rudder controls on the left

Dean at OC Kayak is awesome. Bought my Outback from him in 2022 and he made amazing recommendations to get the most out of it, including moving the H Rail to the back to open up the cockpit. Love it!

I’ve had that same issue while fishing offshore trolling for kingfish and fishing for snapper and triggerfish on reefs.

I need to be able to get off my backside and stand now and again, thanks to ongoing back issues. I'll need to look at the impact of moving those rails aft and whether it improves the ability to easily stand. Happy New Year!

Love my 2022 Outback. I'm 6'4" 230lbs and can easily stand and fish. I installed the Snipe Air Industries seat risers which make a huge difference in getting your seat more elevated (if fish lakes mainly so sitting higher is great).

My in-laws introduced Hobie yaks to me just about 9yrs ago. They had an outback & PA14. I loved them both & couldn't decide which I liked better so I bought a used PA12 then fished it for 6.5 yrs. Year n half ago I sold it for little more than I originally paid & upgraded to PA12-360. I love my PA12's! Perfect for all of my fishing. I know there plenty other great brands out there also, unfortunately I haven't had pleasure of trying any of them

20:30 I have been bass and trout fishing in my outback for 5 years. I love this boat. It is my first pedal driven kayak and it works great. I fished in a paddle kayak for 9 years before i bought the outback . Only down side is after 8 hours your butt and back can hurt. I use cushions on the seat and it does help. Overall fantastic kayak.

I’ve had lots of kayaks … Hobie Outback is my #1 favorite … I love cruising in it and love the way they set it up for fishing. I like minimalist on board so I keep mine simple … just added an FS7 and use the mid hatch for tackle. I added the front hatch insert for storage. Also maybe mention Hobie includes a decent paddle with the boat. Thanks Chad for doing the review. I’m a big guy and find it easier to pedal than any bike style drive.

i just bought this kayak last month and was interested to see both of your thoughts and opinions. It would have been cool to see Dean's setup and how he rigs it up for a day on the water just to give some ideas for people who have the boat or buyers to get a baseline of what they'd like to do with it

Thanks Chad and Dean. I am going to try removing my h-rails for a trip. I love my Hobie and think you did a great review, however you missed a huge thing. Harley motorcycles leak oil and Hobie outback’s leak water…. Even if that is a demo, there is a lot of water in the hull. I love my outback and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Great video Chad! Thanks for taking the time to do kayak and gear reviews! They are very helpful as i dont have any friends that kayak fish and most of the people i run into on the water fish out of box store sit-ins. Anyway, im looking to add a pedal kayak to the arsenal this coming year and right now the Outback is top on my list. The 120pdl and the p127 are also on the list but the lakes i fish have alot of vegetation and i also spend alot of time chasing smallies in our local river. I think the 180 drive will work better in both situations.

Welcome to taem Hobie. I have three of them. Two older out backs and this year 2022 I bought the red one in the background there. PA 14 360 IKE edition. NOTHING compares to the stability, maneuverability and load capacity of a Hobie.

That was an excellent walk through/review. That kayak sounds like a real winner. I'm not sure why this is a better choice than the pro-angler for off shore fishing. Could you clarify that? Thanks.

Thanks. I think it’s better for offshore because of the lower profile in the wind, lower center of gravity for wave action, easier to get to and from the water and it’s lower to the water for landing bigger saltwater fish.

Hey Chad, love this walk-through ( I always learn something new about my kayak). Thank you. The handel on the front comes off and on easily ( it catches hooks and line while fishing and clanks at 80 mph while on top of the truck in transport). I still wish we could get a better understanding of what the weight numbers mean. Perhaps a better way of saying it is “where does the actual effective safe carrying capacity becomes a CYA number?” I personally have fished out of the Outback BEYOND 275 pounds PLUS a bunch of gear, and I’m betting you have as well. Obviously they can’t list something just shy of sinking as max capacity, but a lot of people probably pass over this boat who could easily use it.

They both are great options for the criteria I’ve owned both kinda (2019 Outback and 2022 Sportsman 106). Comfort goes to the Hobie hands down. Stability is sort of a tie. Sitting in the low position I find the Hobie is one of the most stable kayaks I’ve ever been in but standing I prefer the Old Town.

Great content as always…. But I do have a question. How does the outback compare the bonafide ss 127 ?? Of course other than the drive. I own a 2020 outback and it’s been great. However I do a lot of bass fishing and fishing in the marsh ( south Louisiana). So what do u think Chad ??? Would love to hear ur opinion on the 2 kayaks.

The one main issue that stopped me from getting an Outback was the cracking problem where the high position seat tabs sit. I'm wondering if Hobie addressed this issue? It seems since they sold the company the QC has slipped a bit.

Been in both and own an outback. PA14 is more stable, Outback is much easier to paddle. So depends on what you find more important. The Outback I paddle all the time. The PA14 is a beast but INCREDIBLY stable. Trade offs to both. One can’t be easier to paddle and more stable.

Outback hands down. You aren’t paddling that PA very far or fast. One of the reasons I bought my Outbacks.

I had the original ‘19 hull and never had a problem with leaking even when launching in surf. I now have a ‘21 hull and they did change the gasket setup on the front hatch. That one hasn’t leaked for me either.

They are good kayaks, but I can't recommend their peddle drive. It's problematical to stow, under powered and noisy. I owned one and I was fortunate that I bought it from REI. I exercised the REI satisfaction back guarantee. They refunded the purchase price which I put toward the Outback and have not regretted it.
